Tournament Time: Boys' Cagers Finish Season This Week, Districts Start Monday

Saline opens against Ypsilanti and Milan plays Onsted when the MHSAA district tournaments begin.

The boys’ basketball teams are finishing up their regular seasons, and the tournaments begin next Monday, March 7. Saline plays in MHSAA District 13-A at Monroe. There won’t be any strangers in this district filled with Southeastern Conference teams. Saline opens against Ypsilanti. On Jan. 25, the Hornets lost 52-50 to Ypsilanti in a game that went down to the wire. Saline lost both of its SEC games to Bedford. The Hornets defeated Adrian, Monroe and Ypsilanti-Lincoln this season. Saline finishes its regular season with at Ann Arbor Huron Tuesday and at home to Ann Arbor Pioneer Thursday. Tournament Time: Bowling

Bowling teams see season end Friday.

The SEC Red Division champion Hornets finished 10th in the their regional tournament held in Westland Friday. The Milan Big Reds finished eighth in the 14-team field. Jeremy Harper bowled well for Milan, ranking 16th, among individuals. The Lady Hornets placed 12th in their regional tournament at Westland. The Lady Big Reds finished eighth in the 14-team field. The Milan team was led by Brittanie Divert and Krista Clark.

Tournament Time: Gymastics and Competitive Cheer

Saline's gymnastics team looks to place at this weekend's regional tournament.

The Lady Hornets compete in the MHSAA Division 1 Region 3 tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at Plymouth High School. Other schools in the tournament are Adrian, Plymouth, Salem, Canton, Dearborn Edsel Ford, Dearborn Fordson, Grosse Pointe South, Livonia Adelai Stevenson, Livonia Churchill, Northville and Tecumseh. Saline’s competitive cheerleading team just missed making out of districts, finishing fifth at the MHSAA District 2-1 meet held at Southgate Anderson Saturday, Feb. 19. The Hornets placed behind Southgater Anderson, Livonia Adelai Stevenson, Canton and Livonia Franklin, while finishing ahead of nine other schools.

Tournament Time: Saline Hopes for Friday Rerun, Milan Faces Tough Ida Team

The MHSAA girls' basketball tournament gets underway Monday night.

The Lady Hornets closed their season Friday night with one of their best start-to-finish games of the year, as they evened their season series with Monroe at 1-1. When district play begins Monday night, the two teams will play a rubber match. The winner goes on and the loser hangs up their sneakers for the season. If Saline can win, they play Adrian in the semifinal. Saline defeated Adrian earlier this season, 32-24. The Hornets also defeated Ypsilanti Lincoln, 41-34. The lost to Ypsilianti, 58-32. Saline split its two games with Bedford. Saline plays in MHSAA District 13-A at Ypsilanti High School. Here’s the schedule for the district. Tournament Time: Hornet Hockey Team Hopes For Third Win over Bedford

Saline's ice hockey team starts its post-season Monday.

The Saline Hornets closed their season Saturday with a 9-1 win over Dearborn Unified. James Olson scored a hat trick and had three assists. Trevor Carey scored two goals and an assist. DJ Aben set up five goals for the Hornets. Captain Rocco Corrunker added a goal and two assists. Saline starts its post season at 5 p.m. Monday at Chelsea’s Arctic Coliseum. The Hornets open against Bedford. Expect a close game. The Hornets beat the Kicking Mules 7-6 and 4-3 in the two previous games this season. Saline plays in MHSAA Division 2 Region 11. Tournament Time: 3 Big Reds and One Hornet Bound for The Palace

The state wrestling tournament begins Thursday.

There will be three Big Reds and one Hornet at the MHSAA state wrestling finals taking place at The Palace of Auburn Hills Thursday-Saturday. Saline’s Adam Bruley, 39-15, will wrestle in the 112-pound weight class in Division 1. Milan has three wrestlers in the Division 2 tournament, including Tim Sims, the senior with a 55-0 record. Sims, ranked third in his divisional weight class by Michigangrappler.com, is wrestling at 152 pounds. Matt Schultz, 47-8, managed to qualify for the finals despite going to regionals as a low seed. Schultz is wrestling at 215 pounds. Dillon Farrell, 20-5, is the third Big Red at The Palace. He bounced back from an injury-riddled start of the season and made it through districts and regionals.
