Saline Girls Place Third in State Cross Country Championship

Hornet boys also made a strong showing, placing sixth in the Division 1 finals.

The Saline High School girls cross country team fell just short of its No. 2 ranking going into the Division 1 State Finals Saturday, placing third, just behind No. 1-ranked Birmingham Seaholm and No. 3-ranked Grosse Pointe South. Junior Elianna Shwayder finished fifth overall, according to official Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) results. Mike Smith Finalist for National Coaching Award

Smith has guided the girls' cross country team to 16 straight league titles and 11 straight regional championships.

Saline girls' cross country coach Mike Smith is National High School Athletic Coaches Association finalist for Cross County Coach of the Year. Smith, who became a teacher at Saline Area Schools in 1977 and retired from the high school as an English and history teacher, has coached Saline athletes for 35 years. Smith has coached the high school girls' cross country team to 16 consecutive league championships and 10 regional championships. At the state meet, the girls' team has 11 straight top 10 finishes, winning it all in 2009. Smith has been Division 1 Coach of the Year several times and was elected into the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009. Saline Girls Take Second at State Meet

The Lady Hornets' depth was the key to the team's success once again.

BROOKLYN — The Saline girls' cross country team just missed its second state championship in three years. Freshman Abby Rentschler (23rd, 18:42.4), freshman Lauren Green (25thth, 18:44.8) and senior Amy Creutz (30th, 18:51.8) made the all-state team as the Hornets finished with 111 points, just five more than state champion Grosse Point South in the MHSAA Division 1 Final at Michigan International Speedway. Sophomore Elianna Shwayder (33rd, 18:57.2) just missed the all-state team. Sophomore Gloria Park (47th, 19:05.4) also finished in the scoring for the Hornets. Lady Hornets Capture 10th Straight Regional In Record Fashion

Led by Elianna Shwayder, Saline took swept the top 5 places at Saturday's cross country regional.

BROWNSTOWN — When you win 16 straight league titles and you're shooting for a 10th consecutive regional, there aren't many ways to distinguish yourself in the long line of great Saline girls cross country teams. But this year's Lady Hornets team found a way. Saturday, at the MHSAA Division 1 Regional at Lake Erie Metropark, the Lady Hornets managed to accomplish something never done before by a Saline team. Running on a muddy course Elianna Shwayder, Lauren Green, Abby Rentschler, Amy Creutz and Alyssa Cummings swept the top five positions in the race as the Hornets finished with just 15 points — a perfect score. Sweet 16 for Saline Hornets

The Saline girls' cross country team dominated the field at the SEC Red championship Thursday and won its 16th straight conference title.

Halloween. Trips to the apple orchard. Fall colors. The Saline girls cross country team celebrating a league championship. These are just some of the telltale signs that it's October in Michigan. Thursday at Hudson Mills Metropark, the Lady Hornets won the SEC Red Conference jamboree, placing five girls in the top six in yet another dominant performance. It was Saline's third SEC Red Jamboree victory of the season. It means the girls have won their conference for the 16th straight year. Hornets Swim at Eastern Michigan University

The next time the Hornets swim at EMU, they'll be competing for a state title.

Saturday's Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association was held at Eastern Michigan University, in the same pool that will host the state championship meet in November. Before Saturday's meet, Saline swim and dive coach Todd Brunty said he wanted his girls to become familiar with the Jones Natatorium so they know what to expect when the big day arrives. Judging by Saturday's results, the Hornets should be ready. Saline captured all three swim relays during the unscored event. Maddy Frost, Cristina Czyrka, Emily Lau and Kate Rogers took first in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in 1:48. The Hornets captured first in the 200-yard freestyle. Saline Girls Win Ann Arbor Huron Cross Country Invitation

Elianna Shwayder placed first and the Hornets placed five runners in the top 12.

Saline placed 5 runners in the top 12 and 13 in the top 28 as the Lady Hornets won Friday's River Rat Invitational at Willow Metropark. The Lady Hornets finished with 43 points, winning the event with a comfortable 36-point margin over second place Farmington Hills Mercy. Sophomore Elianna Shwayder returned to action and was individual champion, finishing the race in 19:04.7, 20 seconds faster than Victoria Irwin, the second place finisher from North Farmington. After Shwayder, five Saline girls raced in in the 9-13 positions. Lindsay Walter (9th, 20:03.2), Kelly Hall (10th, 20:03.5), Alyssa Cummings (11th, 20:04) and Abby Rentschler (12th, 20:04.2) finished in the scoring. On Road to MIS, Saline Girls Take First At Portage Race

The Lady Hornets finished first Saturday at the largest meet in the state

In the last big regular season test before the at Michigan International Speedway, the Saline High School girls cross country team passed with flying colors. With with top runner sophomore Elianna Shwayder out of the lineup, Saline's much talked about dept was needed more than ever, and it delivered. In a race featuring some of the state's top teams, Saline finished first with 57 points, 59 better than the runnerup Brighton. Freshman Abby Rentschler had a breakout race, finishing fifth in 19:12.6. Rentschler, who had her season's best time, has typically placed in the Hornets' 4-5-6 slots this season. Cross County Coach Smith Honored at Legends Classic

Mike Smith has been coaching Saline student athletes since 1977.

(On Saturday, at the Coaching Legends Classic cross country meet, Saline cross country coach Mike Smith as the honoree. The following is the script read during Smith's honoring.) Coach (Mike) Smith excelled as a multi-sport athlete at Napoleon High School. Known as a runner, he also filled Napoleon’s basketball hoops…of course this is before the 3 point shot and when the slam dunk was prohibited. He was a stalwart middle distance runner for the University of Michigan, where he received his bachelor’s degree in English. Coach Smith started his career as the cross country and track coach at Grass Lake High School where he worked for 5 years. He began impacting student athletes at Saline in 1977 as a teacher and coach. He is now in his 35th …
