The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, along with several local law enforcement agencies, will increase patrols to help keep drunk drivers off the road beginning St. Patrick's Day weekend. The special traffic enforcement period takes place from March 15 through April 8, which includes St. Patrick's Day, the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments, and high school and college spring breaks. Officers with the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety, Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety, Saline Police Department, and the Northfield Township Police Department will work more than 200 hours in Washtenaw County designated for drunken driving enforcement. On Feb. 8, deputies with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 7400 block of Walsh Road in Webster Township for the report of a home invasion that had occurred sometime during the day. An unknown suspect or suspects forced entry into the home through a screened porch. Officers are investigating the stolen items. Larceny On Feb. 9 deputies were dispatched to the 8000 block of Main St. in the village of Dexter in response to a larceny that had occurred overnight. According to police reports, the victim left a 20-foot ladder behind one of the businesses while he was doing maintenance in the area. Police do not know who took the ladder. Criminals pose as flower delivery men to steal credit card information.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a new credit card scam. According to a press release from the sheriff, victims receive a phone call from someone claiming he or she is a representative from "Express Couriers" asking if the homeowner is available to pick up a package that will arrive at the home within an hour of the call. A delivery man shows up to the victim's home with a basket of flowers and wine with an official looking ‘consignment’ note with the gift. According to police, the delivery man informs the victim that because the gift contains alcohol, there is a $3.50 "delivery charge" as proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult. The Michigan Department of Transportation's Courtesy Patrol service will expand into Washtenaw County beginning Feb. 1. The patrols mainly operate on local freeways throughout Metro Detroit and assist motorists stranded on the side of the road. Services include providing fuel, oil, and other system fluids for disabled vehicles; clearing stranded vehicles and debris from driving lanes; changing or inflating tires; making minor mechanical repairs; securing the area around a vehicle; removing disabled vehicles; providing cell phone assistance; and transporting stranded motorists. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help to catch an unknown suspect or suspects that burglarized two Dexter area gas stations between Jan. 3-4. According to a press release, deputies were dispatched to the Mobil gas station at 7717 Dexter-Ann Arbor Road around 3:37 a.m. on Jan. 3. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that someone had smashed out a rear glass door and gained entry into the building. Several items were knocked over but it is unclear if any items were removed, police said. This investigation is ongoing. The Washtenaw County Sheriff is investigating complaints of stolen property in the Dexter area that occurred between Nov. 29 and Dec. 14. On Dec. 13, deputies were dispatched to a home in Webster Township in response to a burglary complaint. According to police records, an unknown person forced open the front door then closed the door to make it appear the residence was undisturbed. Cash, jewelry, and electronic items were taken from the home. Sgt. Keith Flores said the suspects used a designer duffel bag taken from the residence to transport stolen items. The Michigan State Police are asking residents for help to catch a group of thieves breaking into churches across southeast Michigan and Ohio. The suspects may be connected to at least 45 incidents since August. According to the Detroit News, the break-ins were reported in Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw, Hillsdale, Livingston and Genesee counties, as well as Fulton County, Ohio. Police investigating the break-ins speculate the crimes are connected, and that the suspects are probably looking for drug money. Rural churches, where pastors or parishioners may not be back for days after a service, are low-risk targets. A 53-year-old woman was killed while riding her bike in Dexter Township on Tuesday.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has confirmed a 53-year-old bicyclist was killed in an accident near the intersection of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads in Dexter Township on Tuesday. According to Derrick Jackson, community engagement director, a female cyclist was struck by a 2002 Mercury Sable driven by a male resident from Chelsea traveling westbound on North Territorial Road around 6:05 p.m. "By all accounts, the woman was an experienced bicyclist, wore a helmet and was following all the proper safety precautions," Jackson said. The Washtenaw County Health Department is directing all retailers to stop selling synthetic designer drugs immediately.
Washtenaw County officials are putting the brakes on the sale of synthetic drugs in retail outlets after communities across Michigan and the state legislature have accelerated efforts to ban the substance. County public health officials are directing that merchants “immediately stop selling synthetic marijuana and other synthetic drugs including bath salts, according to a press release from the Washtenaw County Public Health Department.
