A number of local businesses are saluting veterans, military service men and women, and their families this Veterans Day by offering local discounts, specials and promotions. Here's a guide to specials in the Washtenaw County area. Two important notes: Free food: Store discounts: Free admission The Huron-Clinton Metroparks will waive vehicle entry fees and boat launch fees on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22. All parks are open on Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Interpretive centers are open on Veterans Day.

This weekend, many Americans will pause to reflect on the sacrifices of our armed forces as we celebrate Veteran's Day Sunday. If you're looking for a way to celebrate your loved one this year, here is a roundup of Veteran's Day events in Washtenaw County, ranging from a tribute concert in Saline to a flag raising event at Concordia University. Veterans tribute concert Saline New Horizons Band will perform on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Saline Middle School located at 7190 N. Maple Rd. in Saline. For this program, the Saline New Horizon’s Band and Measure for Measure Choral Society will perform patriotic arrangements that are both classic and inspirational. On Sunday, people all over the U.S will honor military veterans on Veterans Day. “Veterans Day is a way to honor our own and fly our country's flag,” said Tim Driscoll, post commander of American Legion Post 322 in Saline. But Driscoll and others at the Legion know veterans remember their time in battle every day of the year. "It’s an experience never forgotten,” Driscoll said. “War takes its toll on your body and mind, and the horrors of war are endless.” While many soldiers never come home, many return wounded both physically and mentally. I have found that both Lowes and Home Depot give the 10% discount throughout the year for all Active Duty Military and Veterans. They do not advertize it, but I have had no trouble getting the discount showing my Veterans ID card.   more ›
