Saline Salutes: Stan Poet Recalls Life at the Farm Grounds

Poet won the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce Community Spirit award.

How do you stay on top of your game after more than 25 years on the job? For Stan Poet, who managed the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds for 27 years until retiring last fall, staying motivated was easy. “I loved coming to work every day,” said Poet, who was honored as winner of the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce Community Spirit Award, a special new award created to honor Poet at Friday’s Saline Salutes banquet. At one point, the farm grounds hosted 425 events a year — more than one a day, and drew 500,000 visitors annually. What Poet loved most about the work was the passion of the people walking into the farm grounds. He recalled an event for radio-controlled car races. “One of the parents of a racer told me that their child was on the …

Home is Where the Heart is for Durnen

Jill Durnen will be presented the Citizen of the Year award at Friday's Saline Salutes banquet.

Ask Jill Durnen why she works so tirelessly to make Saline a better place. First, she’ll deflect the praise. But eventually, she'll make it plain. “Saline is my home. Saline’s downtown is my downtown. I grew up here. My grandfather started our family business here,” said Durnen, an owner at Hartman Insurance Agency.” For the 2012 Saline Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, it’s as simple as that. Durnen is among Saline’s best and brightest citizens who will be honored at Saline Salutes, held at 5:30 p.m., Friday, April 13, at Saline High School. The accolades don’t come easy for Durnen, who helped give the awards away at Saline Salutes in 2011 when she was president of the chamber’s board of directors. While honored, she said she …

McCann Uses Her Experience to Help Others Find the Way

Maura McCann is the 2012 Youth of the Year award winner. She'll be honored at Saline Salutes, at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Saline High School.

When you think about bullying, you might not imagine that an athletic, smart and energetic girl like Maura McCann would make an easy target. But this year’s Saline Youth of the Year, as selected by the Saline Youth Council, went through a tough spell in middle school and high school and learned enough to help lead others out of the darkness. Looking back, the 17-year-old McCann said she sees bullying as silly, middle-school behavior. “I liked a boy and some of the other girls didn’t like that I liked him. Going down the hall in school, they called me every name in the book,” said McCann. “Being a teenager, I took it to heart.” The bullying affected McCann, driving her into depression. “I lost confidence and lost friends. I shut down,” …
