Saline High School Student Makes 'Brightest and Best' List

Jessica Lipa was among more than 250 recipients of WXYZ-TV's annual honor.

Channel 7, WXYZ, recently honored more than 250 recipients of this year's "Brightest and Best" award – including one from the Saline School district – with a special luncheon at the station in Southfield. Among the winners for 2013, the 34rd year of program, was Jessica Lipa of Saline High School. The station teamed up with Gardner-White Furniture again this year to present the awards. Saline High School Senior Will Swim for U.S. Naval Academy

Senior Michael Bundas has been accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy.

Saline High School senior Michael Bundas, a stand-out for his high school swim team, will continue his career next year at the Naval Academeny in Annapolis, Maryland. The high school senior was also accepted to the University of Michigan, but according to the Saline Reporter, the Naval Academy had been his top choice. Although attending the school comes with a commitment to serve in the Navy for five years after graduation, according to the report, Bundas knew "it was the right school for him." “It’s the atmosphere, it’s amazing. I mean you walk around campus and everyone’s in their uniforms and everything just looks neat, nice and in order,” he said in the report. “All the halls are amazing and well kept.” Read the full story on heritage.…

Kristin Green of Saline High School Wins Scholar-Athlete Award

She will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance as part of the Michigan High School Athletic Association honor.

Kristin Green of Saline High School was honored as a recipient of the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award at the 2013 MHSAA Boys Basketball Finals at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing on March 23.  Green will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance to be used at the institution of higher learning she attends this fall. Farm Bureau Insurance awarded 32 scholarships, proportionately by school classification, to students with a 3.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average who have previously lettered in at least one sport in which postseason competition is sponsored by the MHSAA. Saline Handiwork Needed to Fight Against Hunger

Bowls created through the Empty Bowls Project will be auctioned off for charity in February.

Saline Area Schools' art department is inviting the community to come and make ceramic bowls from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday in room 121 of Saline High School. The Empty Bowls Project is meant to serve as a reminder of all the people who go hungry each day. Friday's project is a precursor to the main event -- an auction and dinner, which is set for Feb. 7. Money raised during the third annual event will benefit the Food Growers of Washtenaw County, an organization that helps fight hunger. “Our art department makes ceramic bowls (and) our culinary arts department makes soup,” said Steve Laatsch, assistant superintendent of instruction for Saline Area Schools.
