Saline Standout Receives Offer to Play Big Ten College Football

Quarterback Tyler Palka led Saline High School to the MHSAA Division 1 regional final in 2012, throwing for 1923 yards and 15 touchdowns along the way.

Following an outstanding senior season, Saline High School quarterback Tyler Palka now has a chance to play Division I college football in the Big Ten Conference. Indiana University has offered the 6-foot, 180-pound senior a spot as a preferred walk-on next fall. A preferred walk-on is promised a roster spot, but is not offered a scholarship.  Saginaw Valley State University, which plays in Division II college football, has offered him a full scholarship. Palka said he has not set a timetable as to when he will choose a school. In 2012 he helped lead the Hornets (10-2) to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 regional final. MHSAA Institutes New Rules for High School Football Beginning in 2012

Football teams across Michigan, including those from St. Mary's Prep and West Bloomfield High, began practice this week while getting used to several new rules from the MHSAA.

The 2012-13 fall sports season officially began this week, when approximately 110,000 student-athletes in Michigan begin practice in eight sports regulated by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). Practice began for Michgan's football players on Monday, followed by all other fall sports — from cross country to boys tennis — on Wednesday. Schools must have 12 days of preseason practice at all levels before their first game. For the Saline Hornets, the varsity team plays their first game of the season at home Aug. 24 at Walled Lake Western High School. Hornets Can Be "A Really Good Football Team"

Hornets hope athleticism, swarming defense will carry the team into the post-season.

Coach Mike Glennie isn’t one to make bold predictions that end up as locker room material used by opposition. But he’s optimistic about Saline varsity football team. “There are signs that we are just a couple steps away from being a really good football team. But we’re not there yet,” said Glennie. “Overall, I’d say we need to focus on the little things and get better every day.” The Hornets had a strong season last year, finishing 6-3 before losing to Plymouth in the opening round of the MHSAA playoffs. Saline was 4-3 in the SEC Red Division, which put them a tie for third. VIDEOSTORY: With Football Season Around the Corner, the Hornets Start Hitting

Thursday was the first day of hitting at Saline Hornet football practice.

After weeks of conditioning and non-contact drills, the Saline Hornets football teams strapped on the pads and started hitting Thursday. This video features footage from Thursday's practice and comments from head coach Mike Glennie. Anyone who wants to see the varsity team can attend the annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage and Community Night at 6:30 p.m. at Hornet Stadium.
