Purple Rose Theatre Offers Winter Acting Classes

Artistic Director Guy Sanville will lead students through audition and acting workshops beginning Jan. 21, 2013.

The Purple Rose Theatre Company will offer two acting classes beginning in January and February 2013. Experienced acting students seeking to refine their audition skills can enroll in the Advanced Audition Intensive. This five-week course meets on Mondays from 6 to 11 p.m., Jan. 21 through Feb. 18, 2013. Students will focus on audition techniques, including intensive, individualized work on monologues, cold readings, mock-auditions and film and commercial audition techniques. Each student will leave with three audition-ready contrasting monologues. The class is taught by Artistic Director Guy Sanville and resident artist Michelle Mountain, and costs $400. Jeff Daniels Returns to Purple Rose Stage for Special "Unplugged" Holiday Concert

The Newsroom's Jeff Daniels will perform six concerts in Chelsea beginning Dec. 27.

CHELSEA — The Purple Rose Theatre Company will present "Jeff Daniels Onstage & Unplugged" for a limited six-show engagement Dec. 27 through Dec. 31. All performances will be at The Purple Rose Theatre Company, 137 Park St. in Chelsea. A prolific songwriter as well as playwright, Daniels, the theater's founder and executive director, will perform an arsenal of songs that are alternately humorous and poignant. Daniels has toured nationally with his music, but has reduced his concert appearances since landing the lead role on HBO’s acclaimed series The Newsroom. “Jeff’s got an incredibly busy schedule now, so we’re honored that he’s able to fit in these concerts during his holiday break,” Artistic Director Guy Sanville said. Purple Rose Theatre Hosts Chicago-Themed Fundraiser on Nov. 2

The fundraiser features dinner, music, live auction and a performance of the comedy/drama "Superior Donuts."

CHELSEA — The Purple Rose Theatre Company is celebrating its fall production, Superior Donuts, with a Chicago-themed gala event on Nov. 2. The event titled, “A Night in the Windy City - Chicago Style Donut Soiree,” will feature a cocktail hour, fall harvest dinner with vegetarian options, live music, a photo booth, live auction and a performance of Superior Donuts. The event will kick-off at 5:30 p.m. at the Village Conference Center, located at 1645 Commerce Park Drive in Chelsea. After dinner and the live auction, emceed by Lucas Daniels, guests can ride a trolley car, provided by Tecumseh Trolley & Limousine Service, to the Purple Rose Theatre for an 8:30 p.m. performance of Superior Donuts by Tracy Letts. Purple Rose Theatre Serves Up Thrills in 'Superior Doughnuts'

The comedy will feature '70s TV actor Randolph Mantooth of NBC's "Emergency!" and a cast of seven to open the theater's 2012 season.

In real life, odd couples can be tiresome with their bickering and bellyaching, but in the theater they're usually a source of comic bliss. At least that's what the actors at the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea are hoping for in the company's upcoming production of Superior Doughnuts. The show is set in urban Chicago and follows Arthur Przybyszewski, an aging '60s radical who has just about given up on everything: a social life, the chance of romance, and most of all, his family’s dilapidated donut shop. But when youthful dreamer Franco Wicks walks through the door with plans to reinvent the vandalized storefront, Arthur realizes that life still has more to offer him.
