Saline Hires Lindman as Interim Police Chief

City Council voted 6-1 to hire the long-time Garden City officer, who retired in 2006.

He won’t be armed and he won’t have the power to arrest criminals, but Mike Lindman will be interim chief of the Saline Police Department. Lindman, who retired as deputy police chief from the Garden City Police Department in 2006 after a 26-year career, begins work in Saline on Jan. 3. At Monday’s meeting, Saline City Council voted 6-1 to appoint Lindman to the post. He’ll take over for longtime chief Paul Bunten, who retires Jan. 13, and manage the department while the city begins its search for a permanent chief. Mayor Gretchen Driskell and City Manager Todd Campbell recommended the hiring of Lindman after interviewing three candidates Dec. 9. Mike Lindman Recommended for Interim Police Chief Post

City Council will consider the recommendation Monday night.

Saline city manager Todd Campbell and Mayor Gretchen Driskell are recommending retired Garden City Police Chief Mike Lindman as Saline's interim police chief. City Council will consider the appointment at Monday night's meeting. The city is looking for an interim chief to replace Paul Bunten, who retires Jan. 13. Also considered were Rachel Sodowski-Spiegel, former police chief of the Pokogon Band of Potawatami Indians, and Jim Ridener, retired Westland police chief. Lindman retired after a 26-year career from Garden City. He was also crime prevention officer, detective sergeant, patrol lieutenant and investigative lieutenant. Interim Saline Police Chief May Be Appointed Dec. 19

Saline City council gave city manager Todd Campbell the go-ahead on his plan to replace retiring police chief Paul Bunten.

Saline City Council gave city manager Todd Campbell the green light Monday night to move ahead with long and short-term plans to hire a chief for the police department. At the the meeting, Campbell outlined the plan to replace long-time police chief Paul Bunten, who is set to retire Jan. 16. Campbell said council could have a recommendation for an interim chief at its next meeting, Dec. 19. The hiring of a permanent chief is four-to-six months away, he added. “My position is that the police chief is just as important to (Saline) as the city manager’s position.
