Photo Gallery: Memorial Day Around the Mitten

Here is a look at the holiday through pictures. Be sure to share yours, too!

It was a weekend to remember those who served to protect our country - and those who continue to do so today. It was an opportunity for a picnic, parade or festival and a chance to take a dip in the pool as the summer pool season began. Here is a look at Memorial Day weekend from Grosse Pointe to Saline and several places in between. Did you do something fun this weekend? Photo Gallery: A Community Honors Sacrifice

The community line Michigan Avenue to pay homage to fallen American soldiers on Memorial Day.

The Saline area marked Memorial Day Monday with many activities, including the annual Memorial Day parade. The Grand Marshal of this year's parade was Kurt Schneider, a Saline firefighter and U.S. Marine Corps reservist. People lined Michigan Avenue from the firehall to the Oakwood Cemetery. The parade features members of the Saline American Legion and the Vietnam Veterans of Washtenaw County. Music was provided by the Saline High School Marching Band, the Saline Middle School Marching Band, and the New Horizons band. Also marching in the parade were local Boy Scouts, Saline Area Girl scouts, the Saline Twirlettes, members of Saline City Council, and people from many other groups. The parade moved to Oakwood Cemetery, where remarks were …

Robison-Bahnmiller Pledges to Flagpole Project

Just days after the fundraising began, Saline's funeral home stepped up and contributed.

Fundraising for the "What So Proudly We Hail" project is off to a great start. At Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies, Mayor Gretchen Driskell announced Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home has committed to purchase a new flagpole for Oakwood Cemetery.  The announcement means that local veterans are well on their way toward their goal of beautifying the flagpole area at the city-owned cemetery. The "What So Proudly We Hail" project is being done through the Washtenaw County Vietnam Veterans of America Chamber 310. George Perrault, Pete Belaire and Bob Kwiecinski appeared before Saline City Council last week to announce their plans to place a new flagpole and improved lighting in Oakwood Cemetery. “We’re standing here as veterans. We served to …

Good Morning Saline, From Gloria Near

When you donate money in exchange for memorial poppies, you're supporting the hospitalized veterans who made them.

Today's Good Morning Saline greeting is from Gloria Near, of the Saline American Legion Post 322 Auxiliary. Near and other volunteers will be selling memorial poppies Friday and Saturday at CVS, Busch's and Country Market. Millions of the red paper poppies, handmade by veterans as part of their therapeutic rehabilitation, are distributed across America in exchange for donations used to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. According to the American Legion Auxiliary website, nearly 3.5 million poppies were distributed by units last year, raising $2.1 million. The poppy has served as a reminder of war's bloodshed and the sacrifices of soldiers since World War I, when poppies grew wild on war-ravaged battle fields in Belgium. The poppy …

Photo Gallery: 'Field of Honor' Pays Tribute to Michigan's Fallen Troops

The flags and biography tags are on display this weekend at Guardian Angel Cemetery in Oakland Township.

Just inside the iron gates of Guardian Angel Cemetery on Rochester Road in Oakland Township, 245 American flags arranged meticulously in six rows flap in the breeze. Each of the flags represents a Michigan serviceman or woman who died as a result of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and each flagpole bears that man or woman's name, photograph, hometown and a short biography. “We’ve done the flags for the past couple years, and the idea to add the tags with the bios on it was a collective idea," said Guardian Angel Cemetery Director Wendy Mann. “We’ve been working on it for the past couple months. It’s definitely a project.” Mann said the Field of Honor was erected Tuesday near the silo, but heavy rain flooded the area and forced …
