District, Foundation Continue Discussion About Full Time Employee

A proposal to partner to hire a full-time foundation employee may have to wait as the district deals with other issues.

The Saline Area Schools district and Foundation for Saline Area Schools continue to talk about a proposal to partner in funding a full-time foundation staff position. On Monday, Saline school board trustees Lisa Slawson and Amy Cattell met with foundation trustees Reid Paxton and Dennis Valenti to discuss the foundation's proposal. The proposal is for the distrct to allocate $50,000 annually for three years. The foundation would match that allocation. The idea is to take the foundation, largely driven by volunteers, to the next level with professional fundraising and marketing. The position would coordinate and grow activities that have raised $260,000 for Saline Area Schools over the last three years. School officials say they see the …

They danced to music played by DJ/Pleasant Ridge Principal Brad Bezeau. They bid on many gifts donated, like a football autographed by University of Michigan football star Brady Hoke. And they held their breath as the winner of the 100 dollar a ticket 50/50 raffle was drawn. (The $6,200 prize was won by an office pool of Saline Area Schools administrative staff.) But mostly, they were there in support of the …

Isn't it fitting that state rep Mark Ouimet, who took money from schools and gave it to businesses, is the one picking out the winner of a raffle being held to buy books for schools? At a time when teachers are getting laid off, the district is considering the hiring of a full-time fundraiser to beg for charity and corporate donations. I am all for paying taxes to fund public education. But don't…   more ›

Board Takes Time on Foundation's Request for Investment in Executive Director Post

The Foundation for Saline Area Schools wants the school board to invest $50,000 annually in an executive director position it says would generate $200,000 annually within three years.

The Saline Area Schools Board of Education needs more time to consider the ramifications of a request to help fund the hiring of a full-time director for the Foundation for Saline Area Schools. At the December meeting, representatives of the foundation requested that the district invest approximately $150,000 over three years, allow the foundation to use space for an office at Liberty School, and help administer payroll. Over the years, the foundation has donated more than $400,000 to Saline Area Schools programs, ranging from $200 grants for after school programs to $65,000 to help the district buy the materials it needed for new science, technology, engineering and math curriculum at the middle school in 2010. With a structural deficit …
