Faurecia Workers Say Union Leader's Early Transfer is 'Chilling'

Some UAW workers at Saline's Faurecia plant say it's no coincidence that their union leader was transferred days after a picket.

The former president of United Auto Workers Local 892 in Saline said his early transfer from the Faurecia plant was meant to stifle the voices of workers upset about certain practices at auto components plant. Mark Caruso was scheduled to transfer to the Michigan Assembly Plant Ford plant Aug. 13. The transfer was pushed up three weeks, coming days after Caruso and the UAW held an informational picket in front of Faurecia. “Officially, they say it is due to operational needs,” Caruso said. “But I was told the company wasn’t happy with last week’s informational picket.” Last week, in 102-degree weather, union members marched in front of the plant to bring attention to several workplace issues, including mandatory overtime, being forced to …

UAW Protests Conditions at Faurecia Plant

The transition from Automotive Components Holdings to Faurecia has been bumpy for some workers.

On a day when a new flag was raised at the Faurecia plant, United Auto Workers members picketed in front of the automotive components plant to protest what they called unfair work rules. On Tuesday, during each of its three shifts, Faurecia provided a special lunch to its 2,000 Saline-based employees in an effort to help workers get to know each other, a company official said. But while the informal event was designed to help Saline employees take “greater pride in the Faurecia flag flying over the plant,” UAW workers marched to protest “unfair work rules” and to demand the company stop “union busting.” UAW Local 892 President Mark Caruso said he has received an "overwhelming" amount of phone calls from workers who have issues since …

Faurecia & Ford — Questions & Answers

Saline will lose 1,000 jobs and $700 million of business.

Faurecia announced it is acquiring the Saline Ford plant business. Faurecia and  Rush Group Ltd. have formed a joint ventural called Detroit Manufacturing Systems, which will do injection molding, assembly and sequencing of interior trim components from a new facility in Detroit. Additionally, the Saline workforces will be scaled down from 2,100 to 1,100. Previously, the UAW Local 892 voted to ratify a contract that reduces starting wages to $11 an hour.
