Saline Farmers Market Keeps it Local

Started 13 years ago by Nancy Crisp, the Saline Farmers Market has grown in product offerings and availability. Saline shoppers can buy locally made products on Saturdays throughout the year and also on Tuesdays during the summer.

At the Saline Farmers Market, people can buy locally produced farm goods and crafts while chatting with friendly growers and fellow shoppers. It is now available Saturday mornings in winter as well as summer and Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in summer.            It began in 2000. Saline mayor Gretchen Driskell attended a workshop on farmers markets by the Michigan Municipal League and came back inspired. Driskell discussed the idea with Larry Stover, city manager at that time, and together they decided to ask Nancy Crisp if she could organize a market for Saline. They chose Crisp because they knew of her administrative skills through her tenure with the Chamber of Commerce where she was working at the front desk. “One thing they didn’t …

How to Be Fit in Saline in 2013

Health and fitness resolutions are made convenient by the wealth of fitness centers available in Saline.

For those who choose to make New Year’s resolutions, health and fitness objectives are often high on the list. Fortunately for Saline residents, there are many businesses that can help with that objective. Of course fitness means not only exercising but also eating well. A good place to begin improving one’s diet is at the Saline Farmers Market. The market provides fresh local produce both summer and winter. Buying from farmers markets provides pesticide-free organic produce, reduces the pollution caused by long-distance transportation and keeps money local. The winter market is located at Liberty School, 7265 Saline Ann Arbor Road.

Saline's Winter Farmers Market Provides Goods, Camaraderie

The market has expanded and relocated in its second year.

A new location - Liberty School - is already proving successful for the Winter Farmers Market, which has grown to over 30 vendors in its second year.  Last year, David Rhoads and a handful of vendors started the Market hoping to continue the success that the summer Farmers Market had twice a week.   Rhoads, who is on Saline’s City Council, enjoyed success with the first incarnation of the winter market, which has greatly expanded with the city’s backing, officials said. “Dave Rhoads started it up last year.  He got the vendors in and provided the building.  Now, the city took it over and this is the fruit of his labor,” said Paul Kniffen of Kniffen Farms. The market, which runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon, has several vendors …
