Washtenaw County farmers can learn about the state's agriculture agenda and suggest policy ideas to state lawmakers at a special town hall meeting on May 9 in Lodi Township with state Rep. Mark Ouimet and the leader of the House Agriculture Committee. Ouimet invited state Rep. Kevin Daley, agriculture committee chair, as a special guest to answer questions, and listen to thoughts and concerns about the local and state agriculture industry. “The event gives Washtenaw County farmers a tremendous opportunity to get their questions addressed as well as help direct future agriculture policy,” said Ouimet, R-Scio Township. “We want to know what we can do better as a state to help the agriculture industry grow and prosper." Howard and Kelven Braun, guest speakers at the Saline Rotary Club's Annual Farmers' Luncheon, showed this video detailing the history of their centennial farm.
Howard and Kelven Braun, owners of H&K Braun Farm, were the guest speakers at Wednesday's annual Saline Rotary Club farmer's luncheon at the UAW Local 892 Hall. Before taking rising to the podium and sharing the history of their family farm, the Braun's played this short video, which was made to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the farm in 2008. The brothers continue to work their 500 acre farm today. Their legal battles with York Township were the subject of of much of Wednesday's talk.

As winter arrives, a new set of chores begins on the farm.
EAST LANSING — Any grower who uses a ground sprayer will benefit from knowing proper winterizing procedures to ensure the sprayer will function properly in the spring. As the weather cools and the growing season ends, you’ll need to prepare pesticide application equipment, such as ground sprayers, for prolonged storage time. Thoroughly rinsing your sprayer with a small amount of clean water several times will rid it of pesticide residues. Drain all water out of the sprayer to prevent freezing water damage. Dispose rinsate (the water used to clean the sprayer) in a field away from all water sources. Do not let the water accumulate into puddles. EAST LANSING — Michigan State University Extension Agricultural Employer Checklist now provides agricultural employers with updated information about state and federal requirements for hiring employees. This document, updated September 2011, details information regarding hiring employees, procedures to follow, forms to fill out, and taxes to deduct and to pay. The checklist includes phone numbers and websites where employers can get more information, publications and forms.
