Police Report: Man Pleads Guilty in Chelsea Lumber Break-In

The following reports are from Saline Police records. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

An Ypsilanti resident pled guilty to several charges in Washtenaw Trial Court Tuesday. Marc Allen Oberstadt, 30, was charged with felony counts of breaking and entering with intent to commit malicious destruction of property, malicious destruction of property and a misdemeanor count of breaking and entering. According to Saline Police Department records, on March 16, employees at Chelsea Lumber noticed keys missing from two trucks and a forklift and damaged vehicles. Employees found an open wallet inside a damaged vehicle and called Saline Police. The identification in the wallet belonged to Oberstadt, according to the report. York Township Residents Warned to Keep Homes, Vehicles Locked

Thieves are stealing items from vehicles, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff.

York Township residents are being advised to keep vehicles and homes locked after several reported thefts. "We have had several reports of items taken from unlocked vehicles. Recently, even batteries have been taken from the engine compartments of unlocked vehicles," said Deputy Keith DeZwaan, who is assigned to York Township as the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Community Engagement Deputy. "Please keep your home and vehicles secure by closing the windows and locking the doors, especially overnight." DeZwaan asked residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity. Cadets Mitch Eberle, Seena Sauber and Pierce Fitzpatrick are raising funds so they can attend the Law Enforcement Explorers' National Conference.

Today's Good Morning Saline greeting is from Saline Police Cadets Mitch Eberle, Seena Sauber and Pierce Fitzpatrick. The SPD Cadets are raising money to pay for the Law Enforcement Explorers' National Conference in Fort Collins, Co. Thursday, the visited businesses in downtown Saline in search of support. According the the SPD 2011 report, during 2011, the Saline Police Cadets performed 1,701 hours of volunteer time to the department. This breaks down to 341 hours of community service and 1,360 hours of meetings, administrative tasks, and training. They work all of the parades and community events. They ride patrol with the officers, assist in officer training, and are versed in most functions within the department including dispatch. The …

Police Report: Reports of Thefts from Vehicles

The following reports are from Saline Police Department records dated May 7-10. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

Saline Police are investigating several thefts from vehicles from a neighborhood overnight on May 8 and 9. A Tower Street man said someone went through his pickup truck May 8. A Nichols street woman told police that someone took a makeup bag and about $26 in loose cash. Another Nichols Street resident reported that lighters were taken from a van and a car. Threatening Texts Investigated Police are investigating threatening texts sent to a 13-year-old Saline girl May 9. According to the report, the sender of the text conveyed knowledge of the girl’s location and threatened to go inside her house and “get her.” Man Ticketed for Expired Plate A 19-year-old Saline man was ticked for driving with an expired plate. Lindman Makes Final 5 For SPD Chief

A hiring committee will interview the semifinalist for and recommend two or three finalists for the police chief's position to city council

A special hiring committee will interview the final five finalists for the Saline police chief job and recommend two or three candidates to council. Interim Saline Police Chief Mike Lindman, of Garden City, made the final five. Also making the cut were: • Retired deputy chief and interim police chief Gregg Brighton, Dearborn; • Retired chief Larry Hrinik, Davison Township; • Deputy chief Robert J. Kerr, Canton Township; • Police captain Gerald S. Scherlinck, Troy. Firefighters Serve Pancakes, Safety and More at Firehouse Friday

This year, to help Saline Area Social Service, the SAFD will trade their pancake breakfast for non-perishable food items.

The community is invited to attend Firehouse Friday at the Saline Area Fire Department, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., Friday, May 11. Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said the annual event is a great way to get to know the people in the fire department. This year, the fire department has partnered with Iott Insurance and Ace Hardware to give away several weather radios—radios that automatically turn on or switch to the weather band in case of emergency weather. “After what we saw in Dexter, we’re trying to keep people aware of the different ways they can be prepared for severe weather and tornadoes,” Hoeft said. Livingston Daily: Pittsfield Man Dies in Motorcyle Crash

Thomas Anthony Gonzales was on a motorcycle when he was struck by a minivan.

The Livingston Daily is reporting  police have identified a 64-year-old man killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday as Thomas Anthony Gonzales. According to the report, Gonzales was riding a 1967 Triumph motorcycle southbound on M-36 in Unadilla Township when he was struck by a northbound minivan that was attempting to turn west on to Dexter Trail. The 84-year-old driver of the minivan was not injured, according to the report.

Police Report: Couple Arrested After Trying to Leave Leaving Country Market With Cart Full of Groceries

Two Adrian residents are suspected of walking out of Country Market with a cart containing nearly $410 in groceries May 6. At about 1 p.m. an employee called Saline Police to report retail fraud in progress. According to police, two suspects, a 37-year-old man and 38-year-old woman, both from Adrian, walked out of the grocery store without paying for a cart full of liquor, meat, beer and other items, according to the report. In the parking lot, an employee asked the suspects if they had a receipt and the man responded that it was inside the store, and continued to walk off, according to the police report. The employee blocked cart and said, “Let’s go inside and get your receipt,” according to the report. The suspects left the cart of …

Chief Hoeft: Do You Have Plan If A Tornado Strikes?

Saline's fire chief wants people to be prepared in the event the community is struck by a tornado like the one that hit Dexter March 15.

What’s your family’s plan if Saline experiences a tornado like the one that tore through Dexter March 15? Saline Area Fire Chief Craig Hoeft, who went door-to-door in the search and rescue mission in a Dexter neighborhood torn apart by the tornado, wants everyone in Saline to have a plan. “Every family has a plan if there’s a fire. You get out of the house and meet by the tree. But do you have a plan if there’s a tornado?” Hoeft asked. Hoeft and other Saline firefighters arrived in the Huron Meadows subdivision shortly after the tornado struck. He saw homes ripped from their foundation and other houses ripped in half. “There were houses half missing. You could see right into them. The lights were still on. It looked like a doll house,” …
