This is my wonderful mother in law Zina Skowronek. She has been a great mother to her own three children but more importantly she has been an irreplaceable grandmother to my own 3 kids. She is present for every function and event in their lives and always makes them feel special. She has carried on traditions in the family that some are even my children are too old for, like dying Easter Eggs! …   more ›

Reform Bill an Important Step in Preserving U.S. Postal Service

Sen. Carl Levin says U.S. Postal Service faces "an extraordinary financial challenge" in the future.

In late April, the U.S. Senate approved an important bill to reform the U.S. Postal Service. Though the bill was not perfect, it makes important changes to help the Postal Service adapt and thrive in the 21st century. And it includes an amendment that I helped write that I believe will help protect postal facilities in Michigan and across the nation from unjustified closures. There is little doubt that change is necessary; the Postal Service faces an extraordinary financial challenge, and it must make changes to take into account a new reality in which physical mail has in many cases been replaced by electronic communication. But in making these necessary reforms, we must ensure that all the American people can continue to rely on the U.S…

Republicans Rank Education At Bottom of Priority List

An educated population is the number one asset in a successful economy yet Lansing continues their march in the opposite direction.

Republican Leadership in Lansing has made education their number one target once again, showing us that education is at the bottom of their priority list. In the past week we have seen an expansion of unaccountable and unproven cyber schools, an education budget that looks more like a vague illusion of fiscal responsibility rather than a practical application of that concept, and University of Michigan funding tied to unscientific reporting requirements on stem cell research. What are they thinking? We know that an educated population is the number one asset in a successful economy yet Lansing continues their march in the opposite direction.    Locally, we are dealing with budget deficits in K-12 education. We are closing schools, …

Mayor Driskell is savy enough to know the district she seeks to represent is tilted against Dems. She is going to need a lot of money to make inroads. The best source of cash will be the unions, expecially MEA. So, rather than offer innovative solutions, she walks out the tired, old "Republicans don't care about the childen because they won't give more money to education" line. Did anyone notice …   more ›

Don’t Stop Believin’

How five kids from Saline won over thousands of people by persevering when their team project went awry.

Five Saline students came together last October to form a new Destination ImagiNation “DI” team. Although most of them knew that DI was a creative problem-solving organization for students in elementary school through college, they didn’t realize how much fun it would be, or how much they would grow in their complex thinking or teamwork skills. Last Saturday, April 21, this new team, “The 5 Einstein Aces,” comprised of third & fourth graders from Pleasant Ridge and Heritage Elementary Schools, made everyone at the Central Michigan University Event Center cheer.  Here’s how it happened… It all started with a technical task, their “central challenge,” where they designed and built equipment to retrieve parts and deliver products. Over the …

Thanks to All Our Wonderful Girl Scout Leaders

On April 22, Girl Schouts honored their volunteer leaders.

On April 22, 2012, the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan, and Girl Scouts throughout the country, honored their volunteers on “Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day.” Saline’s (over 70) dedicated leaders give of their time on a weekly basis to plan and lead fun, educational Girl Scout troop meetings and field trips.  Whether it’s teaching girls about health and wellness, taking them on a hike or out to the stables to learn to ride a horse, going to an international fair to experience different cultures, Girl Scout leaders have creative minds and caring hearts to share with the girls. They dedicate themselves year-round to helping girls grow in courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place. As Girl Scout volunteers, we have …

Letter: Togetherness Evident Following Tornado in Dexter

Rep. Ouimet offers thanks for the efforts in response to the March 15 storm.

There are many people I'd like to publicly thank for their efforts before, during and after the Dexter tornado.  Our brave first responders in Dexter and the surrounding communities deserve special thanks not only for their efforts to warn us early about the coming tornado, but afterward for ensuring that everyone was safe. Our local firefighters and police personnel all worked together through the night to make sure people were not trapped in the rubble. They continued their valiant efforts in the days after the tornado.     I'd also like to thank the local government officials who worked side by side to help residents. Officials from Dexter Township and the Village of Dexter, along with county officials and neighboring municipalities, …

POLL: Hot Enough for Air Conditioner Yet? Tell If You've Flipped the Switch or Are Tempted

We're enjoying, if that's the right word, a record-setting March – for a few more days, at least.

It's another week for bare limbs, open-toe footwear and iced beverages. It's also time to consider indoor climate control. The letters A-C are being heard in households, shops and offices – sometimes along with a whirring sound that signals chill out. Though the calendar says first week of spring, the temperature – above 80 again Thursday – says midsummer. Government meteorologists flipped on air-conditioned comfort this week at the regional National Weather Service branch in White Lake. "It's also on at my house and has been since yesterday," Debra Elliott said when Patch checked Thursday. She and colleagues posted data confirming this month is a record-setter: But we don't need stats to sense something strange has sprung three weeks …

With DTE Energy always telling us we can save by cutting our use, is a joke. Then they go to Lansing, where they cry, less demand, we need another rate increase. Just like Detroit, Water, and Consumer gas. Cut back all you want, but your still going to pay for it in higher cost because the PSC in Lansing has a rubber stamp, yes to every rate increase, just like the Insurance commission.   more ›

POLL: Should Michigan Ban Cell Use by Novice Teen Drivers?

Senate-passed bill would affect new motorists with graduated licenses.

Cellphones and the youngest drivers don't go together safely, a majority of Michigan senators believe. Under a proposal that passed the Senate by a 28-10 vote Thursday, teens with Level 1 or 2 graduated licenses could be ticketed and fined for driving while chatting on a phone – even in hands-free mode. The bill now goes to the state House. Backers want to reduce risky distractions among newcomers behind the wheel. Some senators voted against the measure because they favor a broader crackdown, the Associated Press reports. The legislation is called "Kelsey's Law" in memory of a Sault Ste. Marie 17-year-old who had a fatal crash while talking on her phone in 2010. Teens with Level 3 licenses, typically issued to 17-year-olds, would be …
