With all the cuts to school budgets I would rather see sports budget cut than other educationalRead More expenses in the school. That is my personal thought. My son plays one sport and while I believe the sports experience is valuable I think parents should pay for it in this budget climate of "no new taxes" unless taxpayers are willing to pay more for our schools. Yes, playing is expensive but why should schools pay for my son to play when school budgets have been slashed everywhere? I don't see sports as a core educational right. I think everyone has to realize you can't have it both ways. Someone has to pay for the extras and I believe sports is an 'extra' these days. Do I like that? No. But the people we elect at all levels are making it this way--and we continue to let them. If we demand the schools to pay for sports the money has to come from somewhere. So, where? I don't think there is any 'fat' to cut on the school budget anymore. It's getting into values cuts and this is a great example of one. We are pitting programs against each other.

Which students do you see with the consistently best grades and graduate with the most organizedRead More work habits? It's no coincidence that it's the ones involved in sports, not the introverts that go home after school to sit in front of a video screen. Supporting sports, especially 'niche' sports that are valuable to small groups of students has become more important than ever when schools are forced to cut costs by offering on line classes and parents are tempted to "home school", especially in an area like Saline where students may never otherwise meet more than three other friends. The peer support and role modeling offered by other high achieving individuals means that sports become more important than ever as a vehicle for teaching children values, organization, and ethics- note that physical education isn't the top three on this list.

Greg's logic is internally inconsistent. He notes that the pay scale is already tiered when youRead More choose to play a sport with more expensive clothing costs (you may note the huge number of cross country runners). He also ignores the subsidy he pays for community sports, and the facility he pays for. If he chooses for his children to compete at a lower level (which will come at a lower cost, and more complaints), costs can go down.

Mike- Sort of sad that you have expended all that intellectual energy on a football team thatRead More basically has an about 50+ year record of failure. What is it they say about insanity ?

Saline ATA Martial Arts is more than just its signature Taekwondo training. Not that we are notRead More proud of our 13 competitors who earned 35 State Championships or our 6 competitors who competed Top Ten in 2012! One (disputed) national championship in the last 70+ years is what UMich's record is. I don't wantRead More to hear about number of victories against the likes of Slippery Rock, Indiana and EMU. The last time they had a NationalChampionsip (other than the disputed 1997 season (where Tom Osbourne and the Nebraska team were given the crystal football) they were wearing LEATHER HELMETS.

Marcia - you bring up some great points. I tried to be more general in this assessment but I plan onRead More taking a look at both sides of the ball in more depth next month. Young has been a problem since he came in. Suh I see as a Bill Laimbeer type - but most of our fans don't like him either it seems. The Lions have a lot of roster decisions to make. Older players at some key areas, younger players who have big contracts. They need to figure out where to spend their money effectively. But character has to be a part of that equation I agree on that point.
Lee Zendel November 30, 2012 at 04:24 pm
Mike- The culture of the Lions organization- which continues on no matter what players they have orRead More who is the coach or general manager, is that of losers. Luckily, I was never a Lion's "fan". Would recommend you find another NFL team to root for while you're still young.
tom vorenberg December 5, 2012 at 09:21 pm
Michael, I cheered for the Detroit Pussycats for 20 years and was let down every year. For the pastRead More 6 years, I ONLY cheer for the Lion's opponents. For the past 50+ years, William Clay Ford has owned this team and has given us nothing but junk, disappointment and poor quality. Had he been at his namesake's car company, it would be broke. How many players, coaches, general managers had WCF had in the past 50 years? Lots, many of the players went onto good careers after leaving this place, coaches have not been so lucky. I believe Mooch is the only one that is still in the game. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results--which is the definition of Detroit Lionball. When will the fans wake up and demand that they will not continue to put bucks in Ford's pocket until he sells the team. It is time to "Fire The Fords."

Sure as soon as they reactivate Billy Sims LOL

It would be interesting to find out whether you would have made a lot of money or not, by bettingRead More against the Lions in every game for the last 5, 10, 15, 20 years. I suspect you would have made a load of money. Sadly I don't know a bookie
DJG November 19, 2012 at 03:40 pm
Actually Lee...that's not true. While the Lions invent new ways to lose on a weekly basis, theyRead More normally cover the spread pretty well. It's a toss up...but the Lions give bookies and gamblers fits all the time. This week...they missed it by a point. Green Bay should've mopped them up.
