More than a Wicked Witch: The Wizard of Oz and the Populist Revolt

Could real life be a muse for fiction? Many believe that the Populist Revolt of 1890s was the inspiration for one of the most beloved novels of our time, L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Dr. David Fitzpatrick, WCC instructor and historian, provides convincing examples of how the events of an era influenced a world-renowned author. Time: 1 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. Location: Morris J. Lawrence Building/Towsley Auditorium.

A Journey From WCC to Timbuktu

There is so much more to Mali than its devastating civil war. Its proud people and fragile mud mosques are testaments to the religious traditions and unique character of this sub-Saharan region. World traveler and WCC art history instructor Elisabeth Thoburn takes us to a fascinating country few of us will ever explore on our own. Time: 2 p.m. to 2:55 p.m. Location: Morris J. Lawrence Auditorium

The Great Lakes Today

Our Great Lakes hold the world’s largest supply of freshwater and the biodiversity of their 32,000 islands is globally significant. Our state’s socioeconomic vitality and our personal way of life are tied directly to their well-being. Dr. Karen Vigmostad, a Great Lakes policy and conservation expert, will discuss the health of the Great Lakes today and ways you can contribute to their conservation. Time: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Location: Morris J. Lawrence Building/Towsley Auditorium.

Detailing & Personalizing Your Vehicle

America loves its cars and trucks. Personalizing them is more than a labor of love; it is a reflection of who we are and who we want to be. WCC automotive instructor Scott Malnar shares some of the modifications car enthusiasts make to their vehicles and some of the unique looks WCC students have created for theirs in the shop. Time: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Location: Occupational Education Building, OE 151.
