Masco Gives Scholarships to WCC Dual Enrolled Students

Masco Corporation Foundation Gift Gives Scholarships

To Ypsilanti Community School Students Dual Enrolled

In Washtenaw Community College Construction Technology Program

A $150,000 gift from the Masco Corporation Foundation will give Ypsilanti Community Schools [YCS] students an opportunity to earn an associate degree from Washtenaw Community College [WCC]. “Masco Construction Scholars,” the new scholarship program funded by Masco’s Foundation will assist YCS students with WCC tuition and costs once they successfully complete the dual-enrolled Construction Technology program as part of their high school curriculum.  Dual enrollment allows YCS students to get a head start on college completion, even before they receive their high school diploma. Dual enrollment is designed to boost a successful transition of YCS students into the college setting.

“We welcome the YCS students with open arms,” said WCC President, Dr. Rose Bellanca. “To have them on our campus – and directly involved in our construction technology program will expose them to the breadth of opportunities here at WCC and help assure a smooth transition from high school to college.” she continued. “We are grateful to the Masco Foundation for its generous support of the “Masco Construction Scholars” program. We in turn, pledge our promise to get these students thoroughly prepared with the skills they need for a successful career in the construction industry.”

Students awarded scholarships will also receive a Masco sponsored toolbox. This toolbox consists of physical tools that will be needed for the WCC Construction Technology program.

“The College Promise model has proven itself to be successful in many communities where dedicated champions exist,” said Masco President and CEO, Tim Wadhams. “Masco and its Foundation are proud to have a strong partner in Washtenaw Community College with its emphasis on meeting the needs of today’s employers by aligning its vocational and higher education programs.

The result is job-ready young people who have had the benefit of higher learning and the opportunity to achieve college degrees that will take them even further in work and in life.”
