Saline's two eyesores

An examination of two (so-far) failed developments in Saline.

If you’ve driven through Saline on Michigan Avenue lately, you’ve seen that one of Saline’s two eyesores is looking much better! Let’s look at both of them today.

The former Saline Dodge dealership on Michigan Avenue in downtown Saline was, until recently, one of Saline’s two eyesores. Fortunately, some improvement was brought about in the past couple of weeks, with the re-grading of the site, and the removal of the hideous fencing around the property. This was covered in a recent local article about the site.

Following the failure of the developer of the site, what we’re seeing today is a big improvement. So, one eyesore down, one to go.

The other of Saline’s two eyesores is a bit off the beaten path. The former Universal Die Cast manufacturing plant on Monroe Street is now a pile of rubble, having looked the same for a couple of years now. The property is a “brownfield” reclamation project, attempting to reclaim old manufacturing land and convert it into housing for today’s consumers. Unfortunately, with the downturn in our economy and the drying up of funds available for brownfield reclamation projects, the pile of rubble remains as one of Saline’s two eyesores.

Both of these sites serve as constant reminders of the harsh reality of business conditions in today’s economy. We can only hope for the best that these eyesores are removed as blights on our fair city, and soon.
