Wittig, Martin Lead Hornets to SEC Golf Title

Caleb Wittig and Ian Martin finished tied for first before Wittig won in the playoff.

The Saline boys' golf team captured the SEC Championship on Wednesday with a very strong showing at Calderone Farms. 

The team entered the tournament tied atop the SEC with Huron at 10-1 and came away with a resounding win over the entire field. Saline shot 292 and finished 28 shots ahead of second place Skyline. Pioneer was third with 321, Huron fourth at 325, Beford fifth at 335 and Monroe finished with 355. 

Caleb Wittig and Ian Martin shot 72 and finished in a tie for first which led to a playoff won by Caleb Wittig. Ryan Peruski and Jackson Lambert both shot 74 to finish tied for fourth. DJ Aben shot 81 to finish tied for ninth and Ryan Schafer shot 84 for a tie for 20th.

Ian Martin, Caleb Wittig, Jackson Lambert and Ryan Peruski all made the SEC All-Conference team. 

Martin, Wittig, and Lambert finished second, third and fourth in the SEC points standings. Peruski took sixth.

"It was a great win for the guys and the Saline Golf program," said Saline coach Debbie Williams-Hoak. "They have worked very hard and it was great to see that hard work pay off in such a big way."

The Hornets now prepare for the post-season.

"We have to move on now and continue to improve to make our way through the district and regional tournaments," said Williams-Hoak.
