Saline Kicks Bedford to the Curb in Boys' Tennis

The Hornets dominated the Kicking Mules, winning 96 games and losing just won.

The Saline Hornets kicked the Bedford Kicking Mules to the curb in boys’ varsity tennis action Monday.

The Hornets aced the Kicking Mules in singles action, not even giving up a single game.

“We came out here and we won the games we were supposed to win. I was impressed with the way we maintained our focus and stayed on our game,” said Saline coach Andy BeDell.

Blake Ahadi beat Alec Cielinski (6-0 and 6-0), David Zick beat Ryan Keifer (6-0 and 6-0), Will Heider beat Adam Swisher (6-0 and 6-0) and Karl Winsor defeated Adam Schultz (6-0 and 6-0.

The Hornets were nearly as dominant in doubles action.

Spencer Kennedy and Donovan Main defeated Nic Mueller and Hunter Delaney (6-0 and 6-0), Matt Geiger and Shyam Shaw defeated Jason Gorring and Tyler Rogaliner (6-0 and 6-1), Tyler Eisenmann and Kenny Viera downed Reed Nagley and Chandler Gorr (6-0 and 6-0) and Ryan Marcus and Mitchell Manninen defeated Hunter Clark and Josh Maynard (6-0 and 6-0).

On Saturday, the Hornets played at the Huron Invitational, taking third.

It was the Hornets best showing at the tournament in at least  a decade, according to BeDell. Saline finished with 18,  behind Midland Dow and Huron.

“It was also the first time in recent memory we beat out the Pioneer boys. My guys are proud of that and that’s something we will use as a motivator for the rest of the season,” BeDell said.

Winsor had a breakout day in singles, beating Andover’s Josh Goteman and Pioneer’s Marcello Salas before losing in the final to Dow’s Juli Guerra. Geiger and Shaw had a big day in the second doubles bracket, beating Pioneer and Portage Central and losing to Dow. In fourth bracket doubles, Manninen and Ryan Marcus beat Portage Central and Andover and lost a close set to Dow

“We’re building some momentum and are starting to come together hitting the thick of our season,” said BeDell.

Saline plays at the Troy Quad Tuesday.
