Saline Girls Take 5th in Tough Grosse Ile Golf Tournament

Emily White shot a couple birdies and carded a 79 for Saline.

The Saline girls’ golf team placed fifth in the 23-team field at the Grosse Ile Invitational, held at West Shore Country Club Friday.

“It was a good field that included most of the top teams in the state,” said Saline coach Betsy French.

Saline shot a 352, placing behind Lansing Catholic Central (311), Rochester Stoney Creek (329), Flint Powers (340) and Grosse Ile (343).

The Hornets placed two golfers in the top 10. Sophomore Emily White finished sixth with a 79. Senior Karla Gross was 10th with an 81.

White began her round with a birdie on 13. She birdied on 18 to shoot a 38 on the back nine. She scored a 41 on the front.

“It was encouraging to see her get up and down to save pars even though she still doesn't have her "A" game going,” French said.

Gross didn’t shoot any birdies, but had another solid round.

“Karla put a steady round together despite no birdies today,” French said.

Also figuring in the scoring for Saline were sophomore Stacy Cruze (94) and senior Heather Vogt (98).

“It's early in the season so the team is just looking to improve each week,” French said.
