Saline Basketball Coach Retires

Jay Plitzuweit led the Hornets to their first Class A District Championship

The Saline Hornets lost their boys’ basketball coach when Jay Plitzuweit retired after the summer basketball workouts. Plitzuweit coached basketball at both the middle school and high school level for Saline, as well as running the summer workouts and camps.  He stepped down to spend more time with his children.

“Winning the district his first year was the first time Saline had won a basketball district as a class A school and the first district championship since the mid-80s. That was a huge accomplishment,” said Rob White, Saline’s Athletic Director.

Plitzuweit’s teams had a reputation for playing hard the entire game.  They played tough, clean games against talented opponents; and while the results were not always what they might have hoped for, they never gave up.  Even when the divisions changed and forced the Hornets to play tougher opponents, the team continued to play hard and challenge themselves with a strong non-conference schedule.

“I wanted to see our basketball team leave everything on the floor night-in and night-out, and our kids competed hard for him.  It was his trademark,” said White.

Plitzuweit’s retirement leaves a hole in the Hornets’ coaching staff that the athletic director hopes to have filled by the beginning of August.  While it will be difficult to replace a coach like Plitzuweit, White is encouraged by the number of capable candidates that have applied for the position.

“I am very excited about some of the applicants that have shown interest in coaching here in Saline. I think with the quality of candidates that we’ve had, we will be able to put a solid coach in place that can build on what Jay has started,” said White.
