Members of Saline's Girls' Swim and Dive Team Receive End-of-Season Awards

The team ended the season in third place at the MHSAA Division I state meet held in Holland.

The Saline High School girl’s swim and dive team held their end-of-season banquet on Monday. Coach Todd Brunty recognized the 2012 team with numerous awards. The team ended the season 3rd place at the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division I state meet held in Holland, MI.

Recognitions and awards:

All-SEC Conference awards recognized the top three finishers in individual events and first place finisher in relay events at the Southeastern Conference.

  • 200 Free - 3rd Place Melanie Schroeder
  • 200 Individual Medley - 3rd Place Kate Rogers
  • 50 Free - 1st Place Maddy Frost

All-State awards recognized the top eight finishers at the MHSAA Division I state meet and include:

  • 200 Free - 5th Place Amelia Armstrong-Grant
  • 200 Free - 6th Place Melanie Schroeder
  • 50 Free - 2nd Place Maddy Frost
  • 100 Free - 5th Place Amelia ARmstrong-Grant
  • 100 Free - 8th Place Kate Rogers
  • 500 Free - 4th Place Melanie Schroeder
  • 200 Free Relay - 3rd Place Amelia Armstrong-Grant, Allison Eppinga, Melanie Schroeder, Kate Rogers
  • 100 Back - 4th Place Maddy Frost
  • 400 Free Relay - 1st Place Amelia Armstrong-Grant, Melanie Schroeder, Allison Eppinga, Maddy Frost

All-America awards recognize the top 100 swimmers for each event from all 50 states. There are two time standards - one for “automatic” recognition and a second set of time standards for “consideration." Athletes who achieved automatic All-America are:

Athletes who achieved consideration for All America are:

  • 200 Free Relay - Amelia Armstrong-Grant, Allison Eppinga, Melanie Schroeder, Kate Rogers

SHS Scholar Athlete award recognizes seniors who have maintained a 3.25 or better and include:
Caitlin Cunningham, Cristina Czyrka, Maddy Frost, Erika Glatz, Emily Lau, Morgan Mervis, Melanie Schroeder, and Mellissa Ungkuldee.

The SEC Conference Sportsmanship award recognizes one athlete from each team at the SEC conference meet for sportsmanship. Mellissa Ungkuldee was honored with this award representing the Saline Swim & Dive team.

The Woody Merchant award is given to an athlete who exhibits sportsmanship, perseverance, cooperation, acceptance of criticism and concern for others. This award was given to Melanie Schroeder.

The Team Spirit award is given to the team member who leads the team with enthusiasm and inspiration. This award went to Abby Kowalczyk.

The Most Improved award is given to the individual that demonstrates substantial improvement during the season and was given to Catherine Marchenko.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award recognizes the individual who has provided standout contributions to the the team and was given to Maddy Frost.

Team Captains selected to lead the team for the 2013-14 are: Sarah Noonan, Kate Rogers, Sam Winchester, and Serena Yan.

The senior class leading the team has been undefeated in their conference meets as well as the Huron and Spartan Relays for the past four years. They placed first in the state as freshman and sophomores, second as juniors and third as seniors.
