Lady Hornets Second Among 25 Teams at Huron Relays

Saline scored points in nine of 14 events Saturday at Eastern Michigan University.

The girls’ track and field team opened the 2011 season by finishing second among the 25 teams competing at 56th annual Kermit Ambrose Huron Relays, held Saturday at Eastern Michigan University. Ann Arbor Pioneer finished first.

The Hornets brought home 12 medals and scored points in nine of 14 events.

The team's lone victory was in the distance medley event, in which Amy Creutz, Samantha Cannell, Kristin Green and Elianna Shwayder finished in 12:37.68, more than three seconds faster than Hartland.

The shuttles hurdles team of Liz Troost, Natalie Wysocki, Bethany Easom and Wendy Szuminski finished third in 37.11, setting a new mark for Saline High School. The 800-relay team of Alina Luurtsema, Katrina Ezeinyi, Cannell and Szuminski finished fifth in 1:54.2. Samantha Richart, Luurtsema, Wysocki and Kristin Green teamed up to place fourth in the sprint medley (4:28).

Records also fell in the shot put event, in which Emily Everett set a school indoor record with a throw of 34-00.05. Breaking her own record by half an inch, Everett placed second in the event. Randi Bennett was third (33-09).

Creutz was second in the 3,200-meter race, finishing in 11:52.4, only a step slower than Pioneer’s Rosanna Niehausler. Kelly Hall was fourth in 12:32.80.

Shwayder was third in the 1,600-meter event (5:19.42), and Lindsay Walter was 10th (5:40.94).

Luurtsema was ninth in the 60-meter dash (8.26). Wysocki was ninth in the 60-meter hurdles event.

Richart cleared 5-01 to place fourth in the high jump. Samantha Szuminski and Wendy Szuminski each cleared 9 feet in pole vault, with Samantha placing sixth and Wendy seventh.

The Lady Hornets return to action Wednesday at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational.
