Hornets Vie for Title, Game Ends in Draw

After rough start, Saline's soccer team finishes with aggression, hard play.

The Saline Hornets kicked and fought up and down the field against Ann Arbor Pioneer on a rain-soaked Thursday night.  With neither team able to score, the 0-0 tie ensured the Pioneers the SEC title.

The first half started off with Saline playing tough, but somewhat overly aggressive.  It led to the Pioneers having quality scoring chances, but the Hornet defense kept them off the board.  Offensively, the Hornets were unable to settle the ball down and possess for a solid attack.

“We were trying to push, and we knew we may give up some stuff defensively, which we did.  We kept the ball out of the net, put ourselves in a place to win the game and just didn’t finish.  To end the season playing our hardest, most caring and wanting it for our seniors, that kind of stuff will really carry over into the postseason,” said head coach Dana Restrick.

The second half saw Saline settle down and really start pressuring Ann Arbor offensively.  They pushed the advantage and had a steady stream of attempts against the Pioneer defense.  The pressure continued all half, but Saline was never able to finish a run against the Ann Arbor keeper.

“Pioneer’s a great team, they always are, but I think we took it to them and it could have gone either way, but it didn’t go either way,” said Restrick.

The Hornets ended the season 7-7-4 (7-0-4 in SEC play).  Saline will travel to Woodhaven to begin district play on June 2.

“The SEC was all over the place this year.  Everybody had wins, losses and ties that people didn’t expect,” said Restrick.
