Hornets Swing into SEC Play

While the victory was nice, coach French was not happy with wasted strokes around the green.

The Saline Hornets girls’ golf team travelled into Kicking Mule country and came out with a 165-177 win Tuesday afternoon.  While the result was what Coach Betsy French wanted, she was not terribly pleased with how it came about.

“I was disappointed seeing so many strokes being wasted around the greens. Their long game is looking pretty good, but we still have lots of work to do,” said French.

That is not to say that the scores were terrible. Karla Gross came in with a one-over-par 37, and Emily White was just two strokes higher at 39. The recently added Rachel Hysong contributed to the final tally with a 44, and Heather Vogt’s 45 rounded out Saline’s scoring.

“I’m really pleased with [Karla and Emily’s] score. With Rachel coming in, that’s going to help. She added a nice score,” said French.

Gross and White demonstrated their leadership of the team, both on and off the course. After leading the way to the Hornet victory, both girls sat with their teammates as they came in for a post-match discussion of the course and the round.  As a team, they discussed cleaning up their play around and on the greens.

“[Karla and Emily] can really help, not only in modeling the correct technique, but also work ethic. That’s what it’s going to be, who’s going to really work,” said French.

The junior varsity, led by Jenni Kohler’s 49, beat Bedford with a score of 210. The Hornets travel to Dexter on Wednesday for their next match.
