Hornets Sweep the Field Enroute to SEC Title

Randi Bennett won two events and the Hornets captured every field event as Saline's girls captured the SEC title.

Saline’s girls followed up their regional title by taking care of business at the SEC meet.

After going undefeated in SEC dual meets, the Lady Hornets won convincingly Wednesday, finishing with 204 points, nearly double the 118 posted by Huron and 111 posted by Pioneer.

The Hornets were exceptionally strong in the distance races and in the field.

In the field, Saline took first in every event.

Junior Randi Bennett continued her phenomenal season, winning the shot put (36-08.25) and the discus (109-07). Amelia Wittig also posted a third place showing in the discus.

Senior Samantha Richart won long jump, clearing five feet. Rachel Paxton was second and Wendy Szuminski was fourth, both clearing 4-10.

Wendy Szuminski cleared 10-10 to win the pole vault. Samantha Szuminski was fourth and Elizabeth Gentile was fifth, both clearing nine feet.

Jacqueline Marchidon won the long jump, leaping 16-11.5.

Elianna Shwayder won the 1600, finishing in 5:01.33. Abby Rentschler was right behind her, in 5:03.17. Amy Creutz finished in 5:18.46.

Rentschler won the 3200 in 10:56.13. Creutz was second in 11:29.22 and Alyssa Cummings was third in 11:30.94.

The 4-by-800 relay of Creutz, Shwayder, Lauren Green and Rentschler won their event in 9:20.14. Saline’s other victory came from the 4-by-100 team of Dale, Alana Hollis, Richart and Amanda Luurtsema.

Sophomore Quenee Dale settled for second in the 100 hurdles, behind senior Cindy Ofili of Huron. Natalie Wysocki was fourth. Wysocki also took fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Lauren Green was second in the 800 (2:18.03) while Gloria Park was fourth (2:24.31).

Alexa Ross was second in the 200 dash.

Amanda Luurtsema was third in the 100 dash.

The Hornets next compete in the state meet.
