Hornets Sweep SMCC to Open 2011 Baseball Season

Myles Debol allowed two hits and struck out seven to win game one.

The Saline Hornets opened the 2011 varsity baseball season by sweeping the St. Mary Catholic Central in Monroe Tuesday.

Saline won the first game 11-1 in a game called after five innings because of the mercy rule. The Hornets won the nightcap 7-4 in a five-inning game called because of darkness.

In the opener, Myles Debol scattered five hits and two walks while fanning seven in five innings work to earn the victory. Debol, Nick Ostrander, Austin McBee and Austin Hauck each stroked two hits. Tim Bruley, Garrett Gordon, Ostrander and Hauck each doubled for Saline.

Saline scored in the first and added three more in the second to take control of the game.

Nobody had more than two hits or one RBI in the first game.

“It was a complete team effort and solid performance on the mount,” said coach Scott Theisen.

The Hornets fell behind 4-3 in game two but scored two runs in the third and fourth inning for the 7-4 victory. Brent Vaccaro earned the win in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out five in 2 1/3 innings work. Gordon gave up two hits and a walk in one inning of relief, but held the Falcons off the scoreboard and earned the save. He also struck out a batter. Saline was outhit 8-5 but took advantage of six walks.

Saline has its home opener against Dearborn Divine Child at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
