Hornets Girls Take Third at Monroe Event

Saline's "B" Team put in a solid showing at the Saturday's Monroe Invitational.

The Saline Hornet girls cross country “B” team placed third at the Monroe Invitational Saturday.

The Hornets finished third with 114 points, well back of Brighton (36 points) and Livonia Churchill (57 points).

The Hornets five scorers were Mara VanSickle (21st, 21:25), Danielle Rathfon (23rd, 21:27),, Jenny Kise (24th, 21;28), Lindsay Walter (25th, 21:30) and Kalleigh Keller (26th, 21:36). Each of the girls, along with Calley Jastrow, won an individual medal.

“We competed very well against other schools’ ‘A’ teams,” said coach Mike Smith, noting that Brighton is ranked among the top 10 Division 1 schools in the state.

The Hornets junior varsity team had a strong day. Kelly Hall won the junior varsity race, finishing in 20:46, which was actually faster than any of Saline’s varsity girls and would have placed her 14th in the varsity race. Alexis Ammon was second in the junior varsity race, finishing in 22:14.

Saline placed eight girls in the top 11 and 12 in the top 20. Had a team score been kept, Saline would have finished with 24 points.

“We had one all-time personal record and 46 season personal records in the mud,” said coach Mike Smith. “We discovered that Lake Erie is a good place to wash off after a race.”
