Hornets Defeat Formidable Field at Legends Invitational

Saline's depth was key in Saturday's cross country victory.

Depth was key to victory as the Saline Hornets varsity girls' cross country team took first place in a race against some of the top teams in the state Saturday.

Saline finished with 71 points, 21 better than second place Grosse Pointe South at the Legends Invitational, held at Huron Meadows Metropark.

Saline put three runners in the top 14 and five runners in the top 22. Elianna Shwayder was the fastest Hornet, finishing seventh in 18:56. Alyssa Cummings (11th, 19:08), Lauren Green (14th, 19:17), Amy Creutz (17th, 19:19) and Abby Rentschler (22nd, 19:32) scored for the Hornets, who raced in cold, windy and wet conditions.. Gloria Park (32nd, 19:44), Amy Frauhammer (41st, 20:02) and Lindsay Walter (54th, 20:19) also won individual medals.

Saline was flat out dominant in the junior varsity race. Saline placed the top four finishers, including winner Kelly Hall (20:20), had nine of the top 11 and 15 of the top 26. Sixty-two Hornets set seaon record times, and 10 set new all-time records. Saline won 25 individual medals. Following Hall were Jenny Kise (2nd, 20:39), Samantha Szuminski (3rd, 20:40), and Danielle Rathfon (4th, 20:44).
