Hornets Crew Competes in the Wy-Hi

Saline finished in the top three in three events

Traveling to Wyandotte for the second time in two weeks, the Saline Hornets rowing team wanted to make another impressive showing. With great weather and little wind to hamper conditions, the Hornets did just that.

The Hornets had three top three finishes at Wyandotte Roosevelt’s annual rowing event, also known as the Wy-Hi, en route to what senior Irene Kitromelides described as a “great day.”

“We did very well today and improved from what we did last week. For me this is my last Wy-Hi and to me, it’s a great end.”

Saline did all they could to compete with the likes of Wyandotte and Riverview, but at times they were overmatched. All the teams were overmatched, though, as Ann Arbor Huron won the event with ease, scoring 287 points. Despite this, the team had some great races that resulted in top finishes.

The MLT8+ team finished second behind Riverview by 1.53 seconds. The race was one of the closest of the day. Riverview’s final time in the race was 5:15.50. The Hornets finished third in the WN4+ event with a time of 6:51.84. Rounding out the Hornet’s top finishes was the MNLT4+ team that finished 0.35 seconds behind Riverview which posted a score of 6:14.63.

While it seemed Riverview continued to one up them, assistant coach Parry Ragland was happy with the teams overall performance.

“The crew did well, and at times they were on the wrong side of some races. We are just looking to improve next week and for the rest of the season in general,” Ragland said.

The weather was perfect for the event, with temperatures hovering in the middle 60s and very few clouds in the sky. This was a stark contrast to a week ago where the temperature was in the middle 40s and it was cloudy for the majority of the event.  Senior captains Tim Carter and Zach Dowling both agreed that the event was special, but was improved due to the great weather conditions.

“I love how the weather held out. Performance wise, we did well in the heats and continued to improve in the finals,” Carter said.

The Hornets are off until they participate in an informal scrimmage next week at Ford Lake in Belleville.
