Hornets Battle to 1-1 Tie With Blue Devils

Despite being shorthanded, the Saline field hockey team played one of its best games on the road.

Despite being down five players and having a short bench, the Hornets varsity field hockey team managed a 1-1 against host Grosse Pointe South.

The Blue Devils were 20 strong while the Hornet played with four girls ready to relieve the starters. Saline, a Division II team, faced the added challenge of playing a Division I team.

Coach Don Hes said despite being shorthanded, Saline set a fast pace for the game. Within two minutes, the Hornets were in their opponents circle and earned a penalty corner. Saline stayed in the game with quick counterattacks and finding weak spots in the Grosse Pointe defense. At the 21-minute mark, Alyssa Scheske scored, putting home a pass from across the goal. The Blue Devils answered two minutes later to tie the game at one.
