Hornets Aggressive Play Sinks Bulldogs

Bailey Workman scores four goals to power Saline's offense.

The Saline Hornets water polo team dominated the Chelsea Bulldogs 11-1 on Monday night. The Hornets (18-2) used an aggressive offense and dominant defense to shut down Chelsea all night.

Saline opened the game quickly. Karleen Koskinen scored the first goal of the game, followed closely by the first two goals by Bailey Workman. Abbey Wrobleski scored both of the Hornets’ second period goals. Saline shut out Chelsea in the first period and only allowed one goal in the half. The Hornets went to halftime up 5-1.

“We really wanted to work on our set-up offense. I’ve always stressed the counter-attack, and we’ve more or less mastered it. We really wanted to focus on something we could improve on.  [Chelsea] was pressing really hard, so I said to drag as much you can and try to make a lot of movement. Kickouts will come with that and I think they did just that. They attacked up top and that opened up the whole set,” said head coach Mary Chatigny.

The second half saw Saline pull away. Kailey Kermath scored the first goal of the third period, followed by Koskinen’s second tally and Workman’s third and fourth goals. Saline’s defense remained tough and refused to allow Chelsea many quality scoring chances. The fourth period saw Caitlin Sisken and Stephanie Bundas each score a goal for Saline. Stephanie Bule stopped ten shots for Saline.

“I stress defense, head to toe. Defense wins games, in my opinion. We really try to get out there and press really hard. We try to teach them body positioning so they don’t get burned on a drive. I couldn’t be happier, they’re doing great,” said Chatigny.
