Hornet Onslaught Continues at Regional

Saline's baseball team advances to the MHSAA Division 1 quarterfinals at the University of Michigan Tuesday.

Since the post-season began, the red hot Saline Hornets have outscored the opposition 46-3.

Saturday at Monroe, the Saline defeated Wayne Memorial 11-1 and Allen Park 8-0 to capture the MHSAA Regional Championship and advance to Tuesday’s MHSAA Division 1 quarterfinal against Livonia Stevenson. The game is at 4 p.m. at the University of Michigan.

The Hornets continued their recent offensive onslaught, pounding 25 hits in the two games. Defensively, the Hornets were sound. On the mound, Brent Vaccaro pitched four scoreless innings in the first game for the victory, and Justin Goike pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in the championship game.

“We played well, from pitching to hitting. Defensively, we made a few mistakes,” said Saline head coach Scott Theisen. “We’re playing confident. It’s a combination of playing on a roll and playing as  a group.”

Theisen said the Hornets have found a lineup that works for them.

Against Wayne Memorial, the Hornets smacked 14 hits and scored in each of the six innings they played before the game was called because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Leadoff hitter Gage Hammond went 4-for-4 with two triples, scoring three times and driving in two. Austin Hauck went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Andrew White went 2-for-3 with double, triple and two RBI.

In the final, Trent Theisen, Goike, Hauck and White each had two hits. Theisen hit a homerun over the right field fence in the bottom of the fifth.

The Hornets scratched out runs in the first and second before rallying for three runs in the third and a commanding 5-0 lead.

Goike took care of the rest, with his 12-strikeout no-hitter.

Theisen said Goike is tough on hitters on days like Saturday.

"He's got that curve and when he gets control of it, he's tough," Theisen said.

The Hornets will take on Livonia Stevenson at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a game at the University of Michigan.
