Hornet Girls Win For First Time on Pioneer Track

Saline dominated the field events.

The Saline girls' track team finished its SEC season with a 4-1 record after defeating Pioneer 84-53 Tuesday.

It was the Hornets' first ever victory on Pioneer's track.

The Hornets were strong in the field taking first and second in every event except long jump, where they took second and third. Saline owned a 36-9 edge in the field.

"It was a close meet throughout. The field events gave us a big boost, and then we held our own in the running events. We split the four relays and ran about even with Pioneer in the other running events," said coach Michael Smith. "It was our first win ever on Pioneer's track. The team was excited. They competed well and were not intimidated by Pioneer's outstanding track and field history."

Saline's only loss this season came in a very tight match against Ann Arbor Huron.

Sammy Richart leaped 4'10 to win the high jump. Rachel Paxton was second, clearing 4'8. Emily Everett and Randi Bennett dominated the throwing events again. Bennett won the shot put (36'16) and was second in the discus (104'9) while Everett won the discus (108'11) and was second in the shot put (34'9). Wendy Szuminski captured the pole vault, clearing 10 feet. Sam Szuminski was second with a height of 8'6. Wendy Szuminski took second in the long jump (14'9). Sara Palmerton was third (13'6).

After dominating the field, Saline needed a solid performance on the track to win. They got it.

The sprinters turned in a very good performance. Alina Luurthsema, Amanda Luurtsema, Alexa Ross and Katrina Ezeinya won the 4-by-100 relay. The Luurtsemas followed that up by going 1-2 in the 100, with Alina winning the event in 12.7 seconds and Amanda finishing a tenth of a second behind her.

Sammy Richart (26.6) took second in the 200 dash with Alina Luurtsema finishing. third. Richart picked up her second win of the day, capturin the 400-meter race in 60.8.

The team of Amy Cruetz, Emily Reyst, Kristin Green and Elianna Shwayder won the  4-by-800 relay in 10:05. Reyst won the 800-meter event in 2:22. Green was third. Shwayder was second in the 1,600 (5:16) and Creutz was third (5:23).

Shwayder finished first in the 3,200-run (11:26). Creutz was second (11:34) and Alyssa Cummings was third (11:53).

Natalie Wysocki took third in the 100 hurdles. Bethnay was third in the 300 hurdles.
