Hornet Daily: Sweeps in Baseball, Softball and Golf

Here's your Saline Hornets roundup for May 15.

Saline’s varsity softball team improved to 12-2 in the SEC by sweeping a doubleheader at Monroe Monday.

Pitcher Kristina Zalewski won both games as Saline won 5-1 and 13-3.

In the opener, Zalewski struck out 10 and walked three. Angel Schilke went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Laura Vaccaro was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Katie Alexander tripled and drove in a run.

Zalewski earned the win in the second game. She struck out two and walked none. Vaccaro struck out three without a walk to pick up the save.

Schilke was 2-for-3 at the plate. Chelsie Leathers was 2-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI.

Katie Alexander doubled and Kaylee Harmon tripled.

Coach Alicia Seegert said it was a great night for the Saline players, families and fans.

“These two games showed how our team has gelled and improved.  These kids have worked so hard, learned so much and now it is all paying off for them,” Seegert said. “They now have an opportunity to reach one of their team goals, a league title.  They have to play well against Pioneer next Monday to fulfill their goal.

The Hornets are 20-6 overall.

Hornets Sting Trojans for 27 Runs in Two Games

The Saline varsity boys’ baseball team walloped their hosts from Monroe Monday, 17-2 and 10-1.

Saline improved to 10-1 in the SEC Red and 21-4 overall. The Hornets lead their division.

In the opener, Saline pounded 16 hits in the five-inning victory.  Leadoff hitter Gage Hammond went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. He singled, doubled and tripled. Justin Goike went 3-for-5 with double and 4 RBI. Michael Hendrickson had three hits. Austin Hauck went 2-for-3 with a homer and 4 RBI. Stefan Hastings was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Andrew White singled, scored 2 runs and drove in 3.

Hendrickson pitched for the win, giving up two hits and two runs, one of which was unearned. He struck out nine and walked three.

In the nightcap, Saline scored seven runs in the first two innings to build the big lead.

Eric Berki pitched six strong innings, giving up one unearned run. He gave up three hits and walked one while fanning two. Goike pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

Austin Hauck went 3-for-3, hitting two singles and doubling. He scored twice and drove in a run. AJ Korzuck went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. He singled twice and doubled. Goike drove in two runs.

Golf Team Improves to 10-0 in SEC

The Saline boys’ varsity golf team remained in undefeated in the SEC with three wins at Brookside Golf Course Monday.

The Hornets defeated Tecumseh, 151-165, Adrian, 151-213, and Pioneer, 151-153.

The Hornets are 10-0 in the SEC and end their conference season Wednesday against Huron.
