Hoffman Continues to Dazzle on Golf Courses

Saline resident Sarah Hoffman completed the Women's Collegiate Team Championship in impressive fashion.

Sarah Hoffman knows her way around the golf course. She golfed for three years on the Saline High School team. She continues to play while advancing her academics at Grand Valley State in Grand Rapids, and she continues to improve by participating in tournaments throughout the year. She recently finished the Women’s Collegiate Team Championship with her teammate and partner for the tournament Veronica Ryan.

Hoffman and Ryan played in the three-day tournament in Dahlonega, Georgia. The event consisted of three different golf challenges, beginning on day one with an alternating shot round, followed by a best ball game on day two and wrapping up with aggregate scoring on day three. The two combined for an 80 on day one, and a 69 on day two, finishing with six birdies and two bogies in the best ball competition. Hoffman finished the tournament with a 75 on day three, and Ryan came in one stroke better at 74. Their scores were good enough to earn 27th overall, and first among Division II schools that were at the tournament.

“We didn’t do as well as we would have liked [on day one]. There were a lot of [Division I] teams here, so we think we did okay,” said Hoffman.

While attending Grand Valley State on a golf scholarship, Hoffman is working towards a nursing degree. She continues to play in tournaments around the area, having recently completed her third straight win at the Ann Arbor City Golf Championship. Even though she continues to improve as she plays, Hoffman still remembers her coach helping her while she was at Saline.

“I think my coach really helped me a lot. She really emphasized short-game, so even if you aren’t shooting at your best, you can still get up-and-down. That’s the biggest difference from high school to collegiate level: everyone’s shooting better, but the short game is definitely stepped up,” said Hoffman.
