VIDEO: Ted Westphal, World War II Vet, Collects Saline High School Diploma

Nearly 70 years after leaving Saline High School to fight in World War II, Ted Westphal received his diploma.

At the age of 86, World War II veteran Theodore Westphal can add another accomplishment to his list of milestones.

Westphal is now, officially, a graduate of Saline High School.

At the June 26 meeting, Saline Area Schools Superintendent Scot Graden and the Saline Area Schools Board of Education presented Westphal with his high school diploma.

Westphal left school in March of 1944, just weeks before he was to graduate from Saline High School. He joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS South Dakota in the Pacific Ocean. Westphal said he saw action in 9 of the USS South Dakota's final 13 battles.

Westphal's diploma is dated June 5, 1944.

Ted and Shirley Westphal celebrated their 62nd anniversary June 6. They now live in Tecumseh.
