Saline Handiwork Needed to Fight Against Hunger
Bowls created through the Empty Bowls Project will be auctioned off for charity in February.
Saline Area Schools' art department is inviting the community to come and make ceramic bowls from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday in room 121 of Saline High School.
The Empty Bowls Project is meant to serve as a reminder of all the people who go hungry each day. Friday's project is a precursor to the main event -- an auction and dinner, which is set for Feb. 7.
Money raised during the third annual event will benefit the Food Growers of Washtenaw County, an organization that helps fight hunger.

“Our art department makes ceramic bowls (and) our culinary arts department makes soup,” said Steve Laatsch, assistant superintendent of instruction for Saline Area Schools.
During the February event, the public is invited to attend and eat soup in the celebrity bowls and take one home afterward. During the dinner, music performed by Saline music students also will be featured.

At last year's event, 600 people attended and were treated to a choice of five soups, as well as fresh bread, dessert and beverages made by high school culinary arts students.
Food Gatherers, which is part of a nationwide food bank called Feeding America, provides 15,000 meals to Washtenaw County residents. Every $5 donated to Food Gatherers feeds 15 adults, seniors and children in the community.
Food Gatherers also partners with agencies to provide food assistance, such as snacks, hot meals and groceries, to low-income people. The agency also helps qualifying people receive low-cost food, cooking equipment and assistance applying for food programs.
