Plant Sale Benefits Saline's One-Room Schoolhouse

The deadline for ordering plants is Monday.

The Saline area School Historic Preservation Foundation is sponsoring the yearly Spring Plant Sale Fundraiser to benefit Weber-Blaess School house. Order forms are being accepted now and should to be turned in no later than 8 a.m. Monday.

“The sale has been going on for six years now,” said Brian Marl, Vice Chairperson of SASHPF. “It began as an Easter flower sale for St. Paul United Christ Church in Saline, and we wanted to open it up to benefit another cause."

Since Marl was serving on committees, both for the church and SASHPF, the idea to expand was an easy one. The sale is now opened up to all Saline Area School District staff, as well as members of St. Paul’s and First Presbyterian Church of Saline.

The Weber-Blaess one-room school house was built in 1867. It was donated to the Saline Area School District and moved on to one acre of school property in 2002. It is currently located  at 520 Woodland Drive in Saline.

Each year, second, third and fourth grade students spend a day in the school house, learning just as children did in eras past. Students sit at the same kinds of desks, use similar materials, eat the same lunches, play the same games at recess, and even dress for the time period if they choose to. Use of the building requires funds for upkeep and student curriculum.

“We continually are needing funds to finance the curriculum needs plus the maintenance and upkeep of the building,” said Cheryl Hoeft, Chairperson of SASHPF. “For curriculum, we have purchased supplies for classroom projects, and books for the individual classrooms, prior to their coming to Weber-Blaess. Staff has written the curriculum for each grade level and each grade is different. Students will attend three years during the course of their education, but each program is different."

The annual plant sale has been going on for five years to aid fundraising for the school house.

Many sizes and varieties of plants are available and include Lillies, Hydrangea, Hyacinths, Tulips, Daffodils, and Azaleas.  Plants will be available for pick up on Good Friday, April 22nd, when school is not in session.  Payment is due at time of pick up.  Place your order here.

SASHPF is a 501(c)(3) and not part of the school budget.
