MEAP Scores Show Saline Students Outpacing State Counterparts

Saline students continue to outpace the state averages but are finding it tougher to match their own standards. That’s one interpretation of the fall 2010 Michigan Education Assessment Program test results released to the public by the Department of Education Thursday. Schools have had their student-level results since December,

Students in grades 3-9 were tested in math, reading, science, social studies and, for the first time, writing. In all, students were measured on 18 tests. Saline beat the state standards on every one of them. The percentage of Saline students showing advanced proficiency was higher than the state percentage on all 18 tests. The percentage of students meeting or exceeding the proficiency standard was higher in Saline than the state average on 18 tests.

However, while Saline students had little trouble besting state results, it wasn’t so easy matching their own lofty results from the fall 2009 tests.

The percentage of students showing advanced proficiency was higher in eight of the 16 tests that were taken both years. The percentage of students meeting or exceeding the proficiency standard was also higher in eight of the 16 areas that were measured both years.

Paper copies of MEAP Parent Reports containing individual student results began shipping to school this week and should be available in all schools within the next couple of weeks. If parents or guardians have not received their students' MEAP results within the next few weeks, they should contact their school for a copy of the results.

All MEAP scores are divided into four performance levels: Not Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient, and Advanced. Students who place in either the Proficient or Advanced levels are considered to be "proficient or above" in that subject. 

Proficiency measures a student at a basic level of knowledge in a given curriculum area. The following charts detail the percentage of students in the state and Saline. The first category is the percentage of students who achieved advanced proficiency. The second number is the percentage of students who achieved the level of "proficient" or better. The third category is the number of students who were partially proficient or not proficient.
