Saline Council To Consider Art Display

Council meets at 7:30 p.m. after a 90-minute budget works session.

will consider approving a downtown public art project when it meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday night.

The city’s Arts and Culture Committee will present the project at the outset of tonight’s meeting. If approved, Chelsea-area artist Rick Detroyer will create seating, a sign holder and arch that will be placed in front of the South Ann Arbor Street parking lot. The project would be funded using the city Tax Increment Finance Authority funds, donations and in-kind services.

Council will also consider motions relating to the transfer to the existing Huron Valley Sales to JAC Products. JAC Products, a leader in vehicle roof rack manufacturing, is investing $6.7 million to expand and is being supported by $570,000 in tax credits from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. As part of the expansion the company took purchased the neighboring 70,087-square-foot Huron Valley Sales facility at 151 S. Industrial Dr.

The existing tax abatement is on $2.65 million in real property. According to paper work filed with the city, LAC Products says the abatement will support an expansion that will create 87 new jobs within two years.

Downtown Director Art Trapp will be on hand to present the trophy Saline captured when it won the during . Trapp will also give an update on the Be Bloom' downtown beautification campaign.

Council will meet at 6 p.m. for a budget work session.

Several items are up for approval in the consent agenda, including:

• A proposal to approve Mayor Gretchen Driskell’s proclamation of April 15 as a “Day of Silence,” which is a student-led event in which people take a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

• A proposal to approve the Mayor Gretchen Driskell’s proclamation of May 20-21 as Poppy Days in Saline. Residents will be urged to wear poppies in support of wearing the memorial flower in honor the sacrifices of America’s service men and women. The proposal also allows the Saline American Legion Auxiliary to use city Sidewalks May 20-21 and May 30 to sell poppies.
