Stanowski announces his candidacy for York Township Supervisor

John W. Stanowski, Attorney and Chairman of the York Township Board of Review has announced his candidacy for York Township Supervisor.  Stanowski believes it is time for a new and better direction for the township by “Restoring common sense, balance,  fiscal responsibility and leadership  which is lacking in the current administration.”  He cites the proposed ordinance to prohibit the legal discharge of firearms because of the “noise,” and the “costly, frivolous lawsuits against H-K Braun Farms over their lighted signs and wind generator” as examples of how far things have strayed from those principles.  He says that noise problems should be handled by enforcing the existing noise ordinance, rather than creating a new ordinance that may infringe on the rights of township residents, and that, as a fiscal conservative he would oppose “squandering” township funds on suits over trivial issues.  He likens the current, “heavy-handed approach” to “using a sledge hammer to kill a mosquito.”

Stanowski states his education, which features a doctorate of law degree, and his experience, which includes terms as Augusta Township Attorney and Assistant Attorney for the city of Jackson qualifies him for the office of supervisor.  He also holds degrees and certificates from Eastern Michigan, the University of Virginia, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the National Defense University.  Besides his ten years in township and city law, his 42 year resume includes 19 years enforcing state law in the Washtenaw County Prosecutors Office and 13 years in private practice.

Stanowski is also very familiar with York Township.  He has spent over 26 years with York Township as Chairman of the Board of Review, and as a member.  He was first appointed in 1984 by Supervisor Jim Spears, and reappointed in 1986, 1988 and 1990.  He was subsequently appointed by Supervisor Dave Potter in 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998; appointed by Supervisor Bill Dean in 2000 and appointed by Supervisor Joe Zurawski in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 (expiring on 12-31-12).

He was awarded the NRCC Order of Merit, May 2004 and recognized in the National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals, Legal Services, 2004.

Stanowski served in the United States Army Reserve as a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps, serving at Ft. Benning, Georgia and culminating with his appointment as Command Judge Advocate of the 300 Military Police Command (EPW).  Upon his retirement as Lieutenant Colonel, he was awarded the Legion of Merit for Meritorious Service 1964-1994.

“I was encouraged to seek the office of Supervisor because of the strong support of local community leaders, friends, and neighbors including Former Supervisors Bill Dean and Jim Spears, former Saline Council  Mayor Pro-Tem Mary Hess, Saline Council Mayor Pro-Tem, Brian Marl, former State Representative Gene DeRossett, State Representative Rick Olsen and Saline’s former chief of police, Jim Douglas.”
