Saline Police Recover Stolen Car, Arrest Suspects After Search

The following reports are from Saline Police Department records from July 31 to Aug. 6. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Saline Police recovered a stolen car and, after a search of the west side of town, arrested two young males suspected of stealing it. The two suspects, a 15-year-old from Ypsilanti and 16-year-old from Westland, are cousins.

While on patrol on Castlebury Drive at about 7:15 a.m. Sunday morning, a Saline Police Officer spotted a silver Ford Edge with the driver’s side door slightly open. As the officer neared the vehicle, a young male, later identified as the 16-year-old Westland male, jumped out of the driver’s seat and ran off between houses. The suspect was ordered to stop but did not, according to the report. A second male, later identified as the Ypsilanti teen, was spotted near the vehicle and refused to give his name or identification, according to the report, and was detained. Police discovered the vehicle was reported stolen out of Canton Township. More officers joined in the search for the Westland teen who fled. Police found and arrested the suspect at Parkside Laundry, at 695 W. Michigan Ave.

The teen police he and his cousin were partying at Motel 8 in Canton and ventured out into a nearby neighborhood trying to find money in parked vehicles. They found the Ford Edge with a key inside and went joyriding along Michigan Avenue, according to the report. They saw “nice houses” in Saline and pulled into a neighborhood to go through cars and find money, according to the report. That’s when they were spotted by Saline Police.

Several charges are pending, including vehicle theft and resisting an officer.

As Man Plays, Thief Steals-Remote Controlled Truck 

A 51-year-old Nichol’s Street man told police he was driving his remote-controlled truck in front of his home Aug. 2 when a man wearing Carhartt-type pants jumped out of the passenger’s side of a silver Ford Ranger pickup truck and took the toy off the street. The suspects continued on Nichols and turned west on to Tower, according to the report.

The victim told police he was unable to get the license plate, but that he’d seen the vehicle before, and that the driver picks through people’s trash.

The green TRX remote-controlled truck, which features the word “Stampede,” is worth $650, according to the report.

Car Window Shot Out on East Henry 

A resident on the 200 block of East Henry Street reported that someone shot out the rear window of his 2010 Honda parked in front of his house. Just before 9 p.m. Aug. 1, the man told police he heard a loud pop in front of his house. He looked out and saw a red “Bronco-type” of vehicle slowly driving west on Henry Street. He later noticed the rear window of his vehicle was cracked and had a pellet-sized hole in it.

Phones Stolen from Rec Center 

Two phones were reported taken from the Saline Rec Center July 31. A 16-year-old woman told police said she was at the Rec Center and left her iPhone on the shelf by a drinking fountain at about 2 p.m. When she returned, it was gone. A 14-year-old girl told police her phone was taken between 11:30 a.m. and 2:11 p.m. The phone service was canceled by 4:20 p.m. In that time, 371 texts were sent and received.

Driver Arrested on Suspicion of Drug Possession

A 23-year-old Ann Arbor man may face marijuana possession charges after he was stopped on Michigan Avenue near Sage Court. Police saw a Ford Explorer accelerate rapidly on Michigan Avenue near Maple Road at about 8 a.m. Aug. 3, according to a report, and stopped the vehicle after it swerved out of his lane twice. Police detected the smell of marijuana in the vehicle, according to a report. After denying several times that he possessed any marijuana, the driver said he had some in his shoe, according to the report. Police found a partially smoked joint in his shoe and later found a plastic bag containing a green leafy substance and rolling papers stashed in a Wendy’s cup in the vehicle’s drink holder.

The case is open pending lab results on the leafy substance.

Thefts from Vehicles in Wildwood

Two thefts from vehicles were reported in the Wildwood subdivision. Sometime between Aug. 3 and Aug. 5, an iPod touch and sunglasses were taken from a vehicle on the 1600 block of Wildwood Trail.

Sometime between 9:30 p.m. Aug. 3 and 6:45 a.m. Aug. 4, shoes, cash, luggage, jewelry and tennis equipment were taken from a vehicle on Chestnut Crescent, according to the report.

Drug Paraphernalia Confiscated 

A 22-year-old Lansing man may face charges of possessing drug paraphernalia after a pipe and grinder were found in the car he was driving Aug. 2.  Police stopped vehicle at 2:08 a.m. on North Maple Road and Thibault Drive because its brights were on, according to a report. Police spotted a plastic container containing what they suspected was marijuana or tobacco behind a seat and, with the drivers’ permission, searched the vehicle, according to a report. The bowl contained tobacco but a grinder and pipe smelling of marijuana were found on the floor were confiscated, according to the report. The man was told the case would be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office and charges may result, according to the report.
