Saline Firefighters Put Down Home Fire in 20 Minutes

The fire started in the garage where a resident was working on a vehicle.

A York township couple stay with family for a few weeks after fire and smoke damaged their home Wednesday morning.

The Saline Area Fire Department was called to a home at the corner of Moon and Bishop roads to battle a blaze that started in the garage just before 7 a.m. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes, according to Fire Chief Craig Hoeft but remained on the scene for a few hours. Pittsfield Township assisted with its tanker.

“The fire started in the garage, which is under the home. So the fire burned up the room above the garage, but we were able to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the house,” said Hoeft.

Still, the home suffered considerable smoke damage.

The source of the fire was an air compressor in the engine of a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville in the garage.
“The air compressor blew up and the fire started instantly,” said resident Robert McNally, who was working in the garage when the fire started. His wife, Margaret, called 911 while he attempted to control the fire.

Margaret McNally, a retired Saline schoolteacher, was pleased to see many of her former students in Saline Firefighter gear putting out the fire.

“I have angels all over the community,” she said.
