Police Report: Saline Man Accused of Stealing Scrap Metal

The following items are from Saline Police Department records from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7, 2011. Arrests do not imply conviction.

A 39-year-old Saline man was arrested by Saline Police Nov. 4 on charges of larceny from a yard after being accused of stealing copper and scrap metal from property at 7605 N. Maple Rd.

According to police, an AT&T employee showed up at the property to do maintenance work on the cell phone tower when he saw a male standing by the gate near the tower. The man ran when spotted by the employee, according to police. Police were called and spotted pliers, a bolt cutter were found at the site. Police said they suspected the man was in the process of cutting and removing ground cables and a copper plate.

A short time later, police spotted a male on the railroad tracks near the property. He was wearing a backpack that contained cut scrap copper wire and wire cutters.

According to the report, he was identified by the AT&T employee as the man seen on the property earlier. He told police he did not take any metal from the property and said the metal he was carrying was found on the railroad tracks, according to police. He also faces a charge of malicious destruction of property.

An 18-year-old Milan who lost his wallet while delivering pizza in Saline Oct. 28 told police that someone one accessed funds from his Bank of America account.  The first draft from his account occurred at the Saline Speedway. In all, more than $160 was taken from his account, including more than $100 spent at a Church’s Chicken in Detroit.

Saline Man Ticketed After Knocking Over Stop Sign

A 69-year-old Saline man was cited for failure to report an accident after wiping out a stop sign on Oct. 31.

At about 11 a.m., a homeowner near the intersection of Ann Arbor and Russell streets reported seeing a southbound 2002 Subaru Legacy turn right on to Russell street at a high rate of speed, going right through the intersection and taking down a stop sign, according to a police report.

Police later spotted the vehicle at St. Joseph’s Hospital. In an interview, the man told police he had no recollection of the incident. Police ticketed him for failure to report an accident.

Woman Nearly Loses $1,600 in Check Scam

A 51-year-old Clark Street woman was nearly taken for $1,600 in a check scam.

The woman, who was selling a vehicle on Craigslist.org, was contacted by man who later sent her a check for $2,500 for the vehicle. The amount was to cover $900 for the vehicle and then $1,600 to ship the vehicle to California.

The woman deposited the check at the bank. Two days later, she went to Village Party Store and wired the money to Oklahoma via Western Union. She received an email instructing her to wire the money in California instead and did so. She was notified by her bank that the check was bad and was able to cancel the transaction before the money was picked up.
