Police Report: Man Accused of Trading Mom's Car for Crack Cocaine

At 11 p.m. Jan. 12, police say a 32-year-old Saline man took his mothers 2003 Honda without her permission. Police say he drove the car to Ypsilanti where he traded it to a crack dealer for an unspecified amount of crack cocaine, according to a Saline police report.

Police were alerted to the situation when a cab driver called police after he said the suspect stiffed him for a $38 fare from Ypsilanti to Saline, according to police. The suspect told police he knew he didn’t have any money and didn’t care because he needed a ride home, according to police.

The suspect’s 58-year-old mother told police that her son had taken her vehicle the previous night without permission and told police she did not want to press charges against her son, according to the report. The vehicle was located by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office and returned to the owner.

A 29-year-old Milan man was arrested by on suspicion of driving a vehicle while intoxicated by medicine or drugs, and is also a suspect in hit-and-run investigations in Milan and Ann Arbor, according to Saline police records.

Saline police were on patrol at about 3 p.m. Jan 15 when officers spotted a van pulled over at an odd angle at the entrance to Old Creek apartments. Police spotted another Ford Taurus pulled over the curb on the southbound side of Old Creek Drive. This vehicle had damage to its front passenger side and was missing a tire and hub, according to the report. The driver of the van warned police that the other driver had been  driving “like crazy” down Ann Arbor-Saline, according to police.

As police approached the vehicle, dispatch advised that the vehicle may have been involved in hit-and-run crashes in Milan and Ann Arbor.

The man told police that his vehicle was damaged during an accident in Milan a few weeks ago during a hit-and-run crash, according to police. He also told police that he came to a stop because he ran out of gas, according to police. He said he had not consumed alcohol but that prescription drugs may affect his driving, according to police. Police conducted field sobriety tests. A preliminary breathalyzer test showed no alcohol content. According to the report, police suspected he was intoxicated by his prescription medicine or other drugs. He was arrested and his vehicle was impounded. Blood was drawn at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Saline.

According to police, the man is a suspect in hit-and-run investigations in Milan and Saline.

Charges are pending the results of the blood test.

Trailer and Equipment Stolen From Business

A Saline business reported equipment worth thousands of dollars was stolen between Christmas and Jan. 9.

The owner of MichiLawn returned to work at 820 W. Michigan Jan. 9 and discovered that his custom-built, enclosed custom trailer—and all of its contents—was missing, according to a police report.
