Police Blotter: Man Returns $1,060 Left in Restaurant

Here's a summary of complaints handled by the Saline Police Department from Feb. 7-14.

A 39-year-old Saline man escaped prosecution by 'fessing up to police and returning most of $1,125 that was accidentally left at a Saline restaurant.

On Thursday, a 61-year-old Ann Arbor man dining at exited the restaurant and left behind an envelope containing $1,125.

A restaurant employee found the envelope, counted the money and stored it. When the man returned for his money, the envelope was gone.

Police interviewed several employees and came up with a suspect. They visited him at his home and told him he’d avoid prosecution, per the victim’s wishes, if he returned the money. Police also told him that if he took a polygraph and it turned out he was lying, there would be no way to avoid prosecution.

The man confessed and gave the money to police. He’d already spent $65 on cigarettes, lottery tickets and prescription medicine and pledged to pay it back when his income tax return came in.

Broken headlamp leads to marijuana arrest

An 18-year-old was arrested for allegedly possessing marijuana during a traffic stop Friday.

At about 10:40 p.m., police stopped a vehicle for a defective headlamp on Ann Arbor Street near Tower Drive. The officer spotted a long glass pipe with what he believed to be the residue of marijuana.

The driver also said there was beer in the vehicle. Police found two 30-packs of beer under a blanket, as well as two bags of suspected marijuana. Two pipes were also confiscated. The suspected marijuana was sent to the state police crime lab.

The man was arrested and ticketed for minor in possession of alcohol.

Saline man arrested on drunken driving charge

A 20-year-old Saline man was arrested Friday for allegedly operating a vehicle while impaired. About 10 p.m., a Saline police officer pulled up to the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Austin Road and saw a Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputy responding to a 1993 Chevy pickup truck that went off the road and was stuck in the snow.

Breathalyzer tests showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.21 and 0.23, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08.

The man was arrested, and his truck was impounded.

Man drives off without paying for gasoline

At about 11 a.m. Feb. 9, a man in a black coat pumped $45 worth of gasoline into a burgundy Chrysler Concord at , then fled east on Michigan Avenue without paying.

Man nabbed on drunken driving charge

A 23-year-old Ann Arbor man was arrested for allegedly operating a vehicle while impaired at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday.

Police spotted a vehicle being driven erratically and enacted a traffic stop at Michigan Avenue near Industrial Road. A preliminary Breathalyzer test showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.136. The legal limit is 0.08.

He was arrested and lodged at the police department until sober.

By the numbers

Saline police issued 33 speeding tickets and eight equipment violations from Feb. 7 through Monday. They also made 26 calls for assistance and responded to two calls about loose dogs.
